Chapter 191 A Matter of Relations

"Why are you here, Victoria?"

The question hung in the air as Victoria's eyes flickered between the two occupants of the room. "I've had a falling out with our parents and decided to seek refuge here. But you've yet to introduce me to your companion," she stated, her gaze settling on Ava.

"This is a friend of mine," William began, his gaze shifting to Ava as he continued, "This is Victoria Bennett, my sister. My biological sister." He emphasized the last part, hoping to dispel any potential misconceptions.

A sigh of relief escaped Ava's lips, "Ah, so you're his sister."

She had been under the impression that Victoria was William's girlfriend, a situation that would have certainly been uncomfortable.

"William, your introduction was quite thorough, even going so far as to confirm our shared parentage," Victoria commented, her high heels clicking against the floor as she moved closer. "Were you worried your friend might misunderstand our relationship?"

William's brow furrowed, "Enough with the insinuations, Victoria. Don't you have your own place? Why did you come here?"

"Am I not permitted to visit my own brother? Are you suggesting I leave?"

"Miss," Victoria swiftly attached herself to Ava's arm, "you wouldn't object to me staying with my brother, would you? After all, I am his sister."

Ava's mouth twitched awkwardly, "Perhaps it would be best if I took my leave."

With Victoria's sudden arrival, Ava's continued presence seemed inappropriate.

"What do you mean 'take your leave'?" William's brow furrowed deeper. "You mentioned staying for a few days, didn't you? Victoria's presence won't be an issue. I'll ask her to leave immediately."

His words were directed at Victoria, who frowned in response, "William, discussing me in such a manner in front of your friend — it might give the impression that we don't get along. Remember, I am your beloved little sister."

"By the way, I didn't catch your name," Victoria added.

"My name is Ava."

"What a lovely name. I'll just call you Ava then."

Victoria's demeanor was warm and friendly, the kind of person who could easily befriend anyone.

Ava nodded in agreement, "Sure."

Victoria then turned her attention back to her brother, "William, are you concerned that my presence will interfere with your relationship with Ava? You've mentioned that you're merely friends, but could there be more to it?"

"No, absolutely not," Ava quickly interjected, her voice laced with surprise. "William and I are not involved in that way. Perhaps it would be best if I left to allow you two some sibling time."

As Ava made to leave, William stepped in front of her, his annoyance evident, "It's late. Where do you plan on going? Stay here. Victoria won't be a problem. We have plenty of rooms."

"Yes," Victoria chimed in, blocking Ava's path. "Don't leave just yet. My brother has never brought a woman home before. You're the first, and I'm quite eager to get to know you."

"Victoria, mind your own business," William retorted, his icy gaze devoid of any warmth for his sister.

"I'm merely stating the truth," Victoria pouted.

"Enough," William snapped. "The third room on the left—that's where you'll stay. Don't disturb me unless it's absolutely necessary—and even then, try not to."

"Very well," Victoria responded playfully, her body swaying slightly. "I'll retire to my room and leave you two alone."

She turned and ascended the stairs, casting a final glance over her shoulder at the pair, a mischievous grin spreading across her face.

Once Victoria was out of sight, Ava offered an awkward smile. "I apologize, I had no idea your sister would be here."

Had she known, she would have undoubtedly chosen not to come.
