Chapter 347 The Ultimate Jerk

Just as William was on the verge of uttering a word, he was cut short by the intrusive ring of his phone.

The call was from his father, Dalton, who was insistent that William immediately attend to a pressing project, as the involved parties were growing impatient.

Reluctantly, William prepared to leave, his departure hastened by Ava's understanding insistence that he prioritize his work.

With a parting farewell to Ava, William vacated her residence.

No sooner had he left than Ava's phone buzzed with an incoming message.

The text was succinct, containing only a brief apology.

Alexander: [I'm sorry.]

Ava's brows knitted together in puzzlement.

Why was he suddenly apologizing?

Ava: [???]

Alexander: [I answered your call that morning. I didn't intentionally withhold it from you, I simply forgot. I apologize for any distress I caused.]

Ava could only shake her head in resignation.

Alexander was only now remembering to apologize, yet when Ava had confronted him earlier, he had been nothing but self-assured.

Ava: [I wouldn't have given it a second thought had you not mentioned it. Let's move on.]

Alexander: [I'm sorry.]

Ava: [Why are you apologizing again? Haven't you already done so?]

Alexander: [The initial apology was for not informing you after I answered your call. This one is for all the times I've upset you, even brought you to tears.]

Ava paused, taken aback, then responded.

Ava: [Are you alright? Why are you suddenly apologizing for past transgressions?]

Alexander: [It's nothing. I just feel like I've been a jerk.]

Ava rubbed her nose, perplexed. She muttered to herself, "What's gotten into Alexander today? Why is he behaving so strangely?"

Ava: [Are you in the late stages of cancer? Is that why you're sending out a flurry of apologies?]

Alexander sent a rose emoji in response.

Alexander: [Don't worry, I'm not. But thank you for your concern. I have a check-up scheduled for tomorrow and I'll forward you the medical report.]

Ava was at a loss for words.

She couldn't decipher Alexander's intentions anymore.

Despite their communication being limited to text, Ava could sense a change in Alexander. He seemed unusually cheerful.

Ava: [There's no need, I'm relieved to hear you're in good health. Isabella wouldn't appreciate you sending me your medical report.]

Why was he bringing up his medical report again?

Ava was confused.

Alexander: [I've made it clear to her. Even though we're divorced, you're still a part of the Mitchell family.]

Ava was touched, yet also irritated.

Alexander was such a jerk. They were already divorced, yet he continued to make such declarations. It was absurd.

Furthermore, even though Ava harbored no fondness for Isabella, any man who tells his future wife that he and his ex-wife are still family is undoubtedly a scoundrel.

Ava couldn't comprehend his actions, but she no longer desired to. She didn't need a man who belittled her one moment and praised her the next. She wouldn't fall for his tricks again.

She questioned whether being part of the Mitchell family held any significance anymore.

Moreover, by continually emphasizing her connection to the Mitchell family, Alexander inadvertently confirmed her outsider status.

If Ava truly belonged to the Mitchell family, there would be no need for such emphasis.

No one would stress that Alexander was part of the Mitchell family.

Because he was born into it.

Ava was merely an outsider. If the Mitchell family accepted her, she was a part of them; if they didn't, she wasn't.

Despite Jaqueline's affection for her, treating her as if she were her own granddaughter, the undeniable truth remained.

She didn't belong to the Mitchell family.

And since her divorce from Alexander, she felt even more alienated.
