Chapter 108 Like an Elementary School Kid
As dawn broke, Ava found herself nestled in the comforting embrace of a man, a sensation unfamiliar from her past experiences. Customarily, she would awaken to the absence of Alexander, the cold space beside her a stark reminder of her solitude.
Her gaze fell upon his handsome, slumbering face, and she found herself unable to resist the urge to gently stroke his cheek. A flicker of reluctance danced in her eyes as she contemplated their impending separation.
'After the divorce proceedings today, Alex, you will be free,' she mused silently.
The faint touch on his face seemed to tickle Alexander, causing him to stir and roll over, resuming his peaceful sleep. Startled, Ava withdrew her hand as if it had been shocked.
Given that their appointment with the elderly Mrs. Mitchell wasn't until noon, Ava chose not to disrupt his rest. She allowed him to sleep on while she rose early to start the day.
It was past nine when Alexander finally stirred, waking up to a throbbing headache and a persistent cough. Noticing the absence of his companion, he deduced that she must have risen earlier.
This deviation from their routine was unexpected. He was usually the one to rise with the sun, but that morning, he found himself waking up to an empty bed.
Still groggy, he trudged to the bathroom to freshen up. As he emerged, Ava entered his room.
"You're awake," she observed.
"Why didn't you wake me earlier?" he queried.
"You seemed to be sleeping so peacefully. I didn't want to disturb you. We don't have to be at Grandma's until noon. How about a boiled egg and an apple for breakfast?" Ava had already brought the food over, adding, "Make sure you save room for lunch at Grandma's."
Alexander took a seat and bit into the apple Ava had handed him, his demeanor noticeably lackluster.
Sensing his lethargy, Ava inquired, "What's wrong? Are you feeling alright?"
He shook his head dismissively. "I'm fine."
"Do you have a cold? Your voice sounds different," she voiced her concern.
She remembered clutching something cold as she drifted off to sleep the previous night. She had wanted to open her eyes, but exhaustion had claimed her.
Suddenly, the phone rang.
Alexander reached for it, answering, "Hello."
"Alright, I understand. I'll be right there."
After ending the call, Alexander set the apple aside and disappeared into the walk-in closet.
When he reappeared, he was impeccably dressed in a suit that demanded attention.
"I need to step out. Something's come up," he announced, his tone a stark contrast to the tender warmth of the previous night.
Ava, seemingly accustomed to his aloofness, watched his retreating figure and asked, "Is something wrong? We should leave for Grandma's early, no later than ten."
Alexander paused, replying, "It's work—something I need to handle personally. I'll go to Grandma's as soon as I'm done. You can go ahead with the driver."
As he finished speaking, he moved to leave.
"Are you sure you're not lying to me?" Ava stepped forward, suspicion tingeing her voice. "We agreed to obtain the divorce documents today. You're so close to marrying Isabella—you can't afford any delays."
Whenever Alexander received a call and had to leave, it was almost always about Isabella. Ava had a nagging feeling that this time was no different.
Alexander pulled out his phone, located the call log, and handed it to her. "See for yourself."
Ava glanced at the call log and saw that it was indeed Felix who had called, causing her to feel a twinge of embarrassment.
It really was about the company.
"Can I go now?" he asked.
Ava nodded, "Go on. But make sure you get to grandma's on time. I can't distract her and retrieve the register by myself. She's too sharp; we'd be caught in an instant."
"I know," Alexander reassured her. "If I'm a bit late, just tell Grandma I'll definitely be there."
Ava simply responded with an "okay," signaling him to leave.
With their conversation concluded, Alexander exited the room, leaving Ava alone with her thoughts.
Alexander had only managed a few bites of his apple, and the egg remained untouched.
As she picked up the apple and egg to leave the room, Alexander turned back and took them from her.
"I'll eat them on the way," he said, and then he was gone.
Watching his retreating figure, Ava couldn't help but smile wryly. His sudden childlike behavior reminded her of an elementary school kid.
