Chapter 251 Protecting His Own
Ava Anderson clenched her fists, her voice firm as she addressed the issue. "I'm not trying to destroy the relationship between you and your son. Why would I do that? I don't know what's gotten into you today, whether you're in a bad mood or someone has upset you, but I haven't done anything wrong. I don't think you should be taking that tone with me."
"Are you saying this is my fault?" Mia Thompson rose to her feet, her high heels clicking on the floor as she closed the distance between them.
Mia was already a bit taller than Ava, and now, standing in her four-inch heels, she towered over Ava, looking down at her with a chilly gaze. "So, now that you're divorced, you think you can just disrespect your mother-in-law?"
Biting her lip, Ava lifted her gaze to meet Mia's, her stance unyielding. "I have never thought that way. Please, watch how you're speaking to me."
"Watch how I'm speaking?" Mia seemed almost amused by her indignation. "Are you teaching me how to speak now?"
"Ava Anderson, it looks like Grandma spoiled you rotten, and now you're completely out of touch with reality. You need a good lesson today!"
Ava's heart skipped a beat as she saw Mia raise her hand, taken aback by this unreasonable side of her.
Just then, an angry voice cut through, "Stop right there!"
Stop thatAlexander Mitchell, despite the pain in his back, strode quickly to Ava's side and pulled her behind him, confronting his mother with fury. "MomMom, have you lost your mind? You were about to hit Ava!"
Mia huffed dismissively, "Which eye of yours saw me about to hit her?" She lifted her hand to lightly brush away the hair from her forehead. "If there's any lesson to be taught, it's purely verbal."
"Why would you need to 'teach her a lesson' at all? She hasn't done anything wrong!"
Alexander held on to Ava's hand firmly, shielding her with his body.
Ava stared at the broad expanse of his back, her vision blurring for a moment in disbelief as she was enveloped in an almost surreal haze.
Her eyes welled up with tears, blurring her vision even more. She hadn't expected that, even after their divorce, Alexander would still stand up for her.
"She hasn't done anything wrong?" Mia scoffed again, pointing a finger towards the person behind Alexander.
As soon as Alexander Mitchell saw Mia Thompson raise her hand, he quickly wrapped his arms around Ava Anderson, guarding her like a fierce protector. "Put your hand down. Don't point at her," he said with grave seriousness.
Mia Thompson lowered her arm, hugging herself in anger, "What's the deal? You two are divorced, why are you still so protective of her?"
"Divorced or not, she's still a member of the Mitchell family, like myshe’s like sister to me. No one is allowed to bully her!"
Ava felt small and protected in Alexander's embrace, his arms wrapped tightly around her as if he was afraid she'd get hurt.
With her face pressed against his chest, Ava tried to lift her head, but he kept it firmly in place, pressing down on the back of her skull. She was a bit worried about the injury on his back—his grip might be causing him pain.
She could feel his breathing becoming heavier. Do brothers hold their sisters like this?
Alexander might see her as a sister, but she had never seen him as a brother.
When the person you love insisted on treating you only as a sister, what could you feel but sadness?
Mia persisted, "If you think of her as a sister, that makes her my daughter. Why can't I discipline her?"
"She's not wrong, and you simply have no right to discipline her, not even as a daughter," Alexander stated firmly.
