Chapter 288: Lingering Fears
Alexander Mitchell stared at her blankly, silent for a long moment.
Ava Anderson didn't say anything more either, turning around and walking away.
She really left, and Alexander Mitchell didn't try to stop her.
Because she realized, what was the point in continuing? They were already divorced, and he was going to marry Isabella Harrington.
But even after Ava Anderson had gone, he didn't call Isabella Harrington. Instead, he just sat on the bed, lost in thought.
He picked up the pillow that she had used the night before and hugged it, burying his nose in it and inhaling its scent.
Ava Anderson drove back to her place.
But William Bennett hadn't replied to her message yet.
It had been over two hours since she had sent the message.
She was not a superstitious person, but she felt that in this vast and wonderful world, some things deserved reverence.
The dream had felt so real that the more she thought about it, the more anxious she became, so she decided to call William Bennett.
But there was no answer on his cell phone.
Finally, she got a recorded message: "The number you have dialed is not available at the moment, please try again later."
The call had connected, but he hadn't picked up, nor had it been disconnected immediately.
A pang of anxiety grew in Ava Anderson's chest.
Could something have really happened to him?
After mulling it over, she called Victoria Bennett.
While browsing through her contacts, she noticed an incoming call she hadn't taken.
At six o'clock that morning, her phone had a call log showing a connection lasting less than two minutes.
Could it have been Alexander Mitchell who had taken her call and not told her?
Ava Anderson dialed the mysterious number with a sense of suspicion.
After about ten seconds, someone answered.
"Hello, this is Ava Anderson. Did you call me today?"
"Ava, it's me, I'm Victoria Bennett."
"Victoria Bennett, oh, it was you. I saw someone had called, but I didn't pick up."
"I did call you this morning," said Victoria Bennett. "But it was your ex-husband who answered. He seemed quite unhappy."
Ava Anderson's expression stiffened.
Alexander Mitchell had answered her phone and hadn’t even mentioned it.
"Maybe I was asleep this morning and he picked it up when he saw it. He didn't say anything to you, did he?"
Victoria Bennett pondered for a moment: "He didn't say much, just a few words was enough."
"A few words?" Ava Anderson felt a sense of unease. "What did he say to you?"
"Well, he said... never mind, what he said isn't important anymore. It's all in the past."
"Victoria Bennett, whatever he said, don't take it to heart. He has a foul temper, so don't stoop to his level. He can be quite irrational most of the time."
Victoria Bennett smiled, "It's okay. The reason I called you today was to have lunch together. Let's pick a restaurant and catch up."
"Lunch today?" Ava Anderson thought for a moment. "Sure, but I have something I want to ask you."
"What is it?"
"I tried reaching out to your brother this morning, sent him a message, but he didn't reply. Then I waited and even called him, but he didn't pick up. Do you know where he is?"
"Really? My brother didn't pick up your call, are you sure it went through?"
"I'm sure it did. He didn't answer, but he didn't hang up either, and he didn't reply to my message. I'm a bit worried, so I thought I'd ask you if you know anything about his whereabouts?"
The nightmare was swirling in Ava Anderson's mind, unsettling her deeply as it felt all too real and still left her shaken.
