Chapter 68 Asking for It

As George watched his wife tenderly assist their son back into the sterile hospital bed, a pang of jealousy unexpectedly pierced his heart. He found himself yearning for the same gentle care that she was bestowing upon their son.

Would Mia have exhibited the same level of concern and affection if he had been the one in the accident?

"Mom, dad didn't mean to mislead you," their son pleaded, his voice echoing in the sterile room. "He thought I was seriously injured when he arrived. Please, don't hold it against him."

A silent prayer formed in his heart, a desperate plea for the deteriorating relationship between his parents to cease its downward spiral.

George's simmering resentment towards Alex had finally begun to cool. The boy had the decency to defend him, after all.

"It's alright. I'm accustomed to it," Mia replied, her voice laced with a bitter undertone. "This isn't the first time he's deceived me."

George was rendered speechless, the sting of her words feeling akin to a knife wound to his heart.

"Where is your wife?" Mia asked, her tone shifting.

"Ava's unwell. She's been admitted to the hospital with a stomach issue. She'll be there for a few days. Please, don't inform her about my injury," Alex implored.

"What? She's in the hospital?" George interjected, stepping forward in alarm. "Why wasn't I informed? Your grandmother will be beside herself with worry."

"You never asked," Alexander retorted, his tone icy.

"Which hospital is she in?" Mia inquired, her tone softer.

"Virtuous Heaven Hospital."Mia's gaze fell upon the torn divorce papers scattered on the bedside table. She picked them up, scanning them briefly. "Are you really going through with the divorce?"

"Mom, please don't tell Grandma," Alex pleaded.

"Your father has already filled me in," Mia replied, stuffing the torn papers into a briefcase. "I'm aware of your grandmother's fragile health. I won't mention it. However, since this divorce agreement is torn, it's useless. You'll need to print a new one and sign it again."

George frowned, his confusion evident. "Mia, what are you implying?"

Mia turned to face him, her expression unreadable. "Am I mistaken?"She then proceeded to tuck Alex into bed. "Now that I know you're alright, I can leave with a clear conscience. I have a lot of work to attend to. I'll come back to check on you once I'm done."

Ever since her relationship with George had soured, Mia had immersed herself in her work, refusing to take breaks even on weekends. As a financier, she had climbed the corporate ladder to become the president of a bank.

Alex felt a twinge of sadness. His mother was a rare presence in his life. But he was an adult now—he couldn't afford to be clingy.

"Alright, go and attend to your work," he said, his voice steady.

Mia rose, the briefcase firmly in her grasp.

"Mom, why are you taking that with you?" Alex asked, his brow furrowed in confusion."This has been torn up, hasn't it? I'll dispose of it for you, so it doesn't leak out and upset Grandma.".

Mia nodded in understanding. "Okay, then."

After Mia had exited the hospital room, George followed suit.

"Mia, why did you leave so quickly? He's your son. Even if you have issues with me, you can't just..." he began, his voice trailing off.

"Will his condition improve if I stay?" Mia interrupted, her tone sharp. "Right now, he probably needs solitude. Besides, I'm swamped with work."

"Mia, aren't you concerned about what's happening with Alex and Ava? He's your son. Do you want to see him suffer because of his mistakes?" George implored.

"He's already made them," Mia replied, her voice devoid of emotion. "Weren't you the same back in the day? Stubborn as an ox, what good did it do?"

"There's always a solution!" George retorted, his breaths coming in short, rapid gasps. "You can see they're a good match. Don't let a mistake that shouldn't have happened in the first place ruin them."

Mia fell silent for a moment. She slipped the document folder into her bag and replied indifferently, "He brought this upon himself. I'm leaving."
