Chapter 111 He Doesn't Care
Ava stole a quick glance at the clock. "Alright," she murmured to herself.
Her fingers deftly navigated her phone, dialing Alexander's number. The dial tone echoed in her ear for a brief moment before it was interrupted by a familiar voice. "Hello?"
"Alex, when will you be here? Grandma is waiting," Ava's voice was laced with a hint of impatience.
"I've got some matters to attend to at work, just hold on," came his curt reply.
She pressed on, "How much longer will you be?"
"Not long," he assured her.
Suddenly, a feminine voice echoed through the phone, "Alex, I've accidentally spilled water on myself. Could you help me change my clothes?"
Ava's blood ran cold upon recognizing Isabella's voice. Wasn't Alexander supposed to be at the office? Why was he now in the company of Isabella?
Ava was on the verge of confronting him, but with Grandma sitting nearby, she held her tongue. Instead, she coolly told Alexander, "Just hurry up, don't keep Grandma waiting."
All she received in return was a nonchalant hum of acknowledgment.
After ending the call, Ava turned to Scarlett and said, “Grandma, he’ll be here soon. I’m going to check on the kitchen preparations. You rest for a bit.”
“Sure, dear,” the elderly woman adjusted her glasses. “Tell the cooks to add a little extra spice. I know you have a penchant for the hot stuff.”
“Grandma, how did you know?” Ava was taken aback. She never indulged in spicy foods in front of the family.
“Of course, I know. It’s just that Alex isn’t fond of it, so you stopped too. I understand, darling. But don't always make sacrifices. He should learn to compromise for you too.”
“Thank you, Grandma.” Ava was genuinely moved. The kinder her grandmother was to her, the more guilt she felt for deceiving her.
Her grandmother's dearest wish was to see Ava pregnant, to experience the joy of a great-grandchild. Yet Ava couldn't share her current pregnancy with her, knowing the immense happiness it would bring the old woman.
Swallowing her sorrow, Ava left her grandmother’s room and headed downstairs. She took out her phone once more and dialed Alexander’s number.
The call was answered by Isabella's voice, “Hello, looking for Alexander?”
Hearing Isabella's smug tone, Ava felt a wave of revulsion wash over her.
“Where’s Alex?”
“He went out to pick up lunch for me. I was craving something from the Chateau Bistro, and he decided to drive out to get it, even though it’s not close. I told him he didn’t have to, but he insisted. He’s just too good to me.”
“That’s enough,” Ava cut her off. “Spare me the details. I’m not buying your act.”
“Ava, please. I’m just stating facts. I know you can’t stand me, and there’s not much I can do about it. Alex just prefers to be with me; I can't help it.”
Isabella’s words were laden with such pretentiousness. It was palpable even through the phone.
Ava’s lips curled into a slight smile. “You must be quite pleased that he's spending the day with you, hmm?”
“What else? He’s the man I love. Wouldn’t you want him around you? Too bad he’s just not that into you.”
What men are most desired in the world? Apparently, those taken from another woman.
Ava laughed out loud. “You’re quite the character. It seems you have no clue about what’s going to happen today.”
“What’s going to happen? Are you going to use some trick to steal Alex away again? Using his grandmother? That’s all you’ve got left. Nothing else works because he doesn’t care about you.”
