Chapter 148 A Shared Meal

Scarlett's voice took on a stern edge. "This is unacceptable," she declared. "I expect to see those documents before me within the hour. If not, I will come and find you myself. I need to ascertain your identification status."

The icy tone in the elderly woman's voice made Ava realize that her suspicions had been aroused. She had to return the documents promptly.

"Understood, Grandma," she responded. "I'll ensure they're returned to you immediately."

"Do see that you do," Scarlett warned. "And mind the time. Otherwise, I might start to question your true intentions with those documents." With that, she ended the call.

Ava could detect the suspicion lacing Scarlett's words, clear and potent. It seemed as though the old woman had some inkling of the truth but chose to withhold her judgment, offering Ava one last opportunity.

Ava shuddered at the thought of Scarlett's reaction if the truth were to be fully exposed.

"Are you satisfied now, Alexander?" she spat out. "You couldn't even wait until tomorrow morning. Grandma expects our marriage certificates within the hour."

"Then let's delay it," Alexander suggested casually. "There will be other opportunities to retrieve the documents."

Ava's anger flared at Alexander's nonchalant attitude. She wanted to lash out at him. "You..."

Just then, William made his entrance into the hall. "Ava, are you ready?"

Alexander's gaze turned frosty at the sight of William. "You invited him too?"

Was Ava planning to marry William immediately after their divorce?

"William was kind enough to offer me a ride. Look at yourself, Alexander," Ava retorted, clutching the marriage certificates tightly. "You've been a huge disappointment."

Her anger had subsided, replaced by a deep sense of disappointment.

"From this point forward, I won't be the one to initiate the divorce proceedings, Alexander. If you're not in a rush, why should I be? After all, it’s you and Isabella who stand to lose. You figure it out."

She was weary from the repeated missed opportunities. Why couldn't she just divorce Alexander?

Having said her piece, Ava turned and walked away. "William, let's go."

"Ava, are you okay?"

"I'm fine. Let's go have dinner and not let him ruin our evening," Ava replied, struggling to keep her emotions under control.

Once they were in the car, Ava suddenly found it hard to breathe.

William quickly rolled down the window to let in some fresh air.

The cool breeze helped, and Ava felt her breath return to normal. She gently touched her belly.

"Are you sure you're okay? Should we go to the hospital?"

"No, I'm fine."

Her pain was emotional, something no doctor could cure.

However, for the sake of the child she was carrying, she knew she had to remain composed.

"There will be another chance for the divorce, don't worry."

Ava sighed. "How did things get to this point?"

"Indeed," William echoed her confusion, particularly given that Alexander had been caught drunk driving today, despite the fact that most DUI arrests typically occur at night.

Alexander was not one to be careless about important matters. If he truly wanted a divorce, she was certain he would have handled the situation with utmost care. His decision to drink and drive was completely out of character. After all, he always had a driver on standby.

"Ava, do you need a ride home?"

"I still owe you dinner," Ava replied. "Let's go eat."

She had been intending to return the favor, to settle the debt rather than let it linger.

"Alright, where would you like to go?"

"Anywhere is fine. Let's go somewhere you like."

He understood that Ava was in no state to make decisions at the moment.
