Chapter 809 As a Substitute

Madison's heart raced when she heard him.

"Didn't he say they were divorced? Does he still love his ex-wife?" she wondered.

Seeing her confusion, Alexander said, "I still love her."

"Then why did you get divorced?" Madison asked.

"Because I was stupid. I didn't appreciate her until she left me," Alexander replied, looking despondent.

Madison felt a pang of pain. He really loved that woman; she could tell.

"Did you try to get her back?" she asked.

"I tried many times," Alexander said.

"And?" Madison pressed.

"She married someone else," Alexander said with a sad smile.

Madison's heart leapt. 'His ex-wife is married. That means she doesn't love him anymore,' she thought.

"And now?" she asked.

"I still love her," Alexander said, staring at the sky. "If she came back, I'd do anything, but she doesn't love me anymore."

Madison sighed in relief but felt a dull ache knowing he still loved his ex-wife.

"I know it's tough, but time heals," she tried to comfort him.

"Impossible," Alexander said hoarsely. "You wouldn't understand."

Madison felt hurt. 'I wouldn't understand? Did he have to be so blunt?' she thought.

"I won't love anyone else in this lifetime," Alexander said, hands in his pockets, feeling the cold wind. "I only love her."

Madison frowned. 'Why is he telling me this?' she wondered, feeling breathless.

"Madison, you remind me of her a bit," Alexander said, looking at her.

Madison met his gaze, confused. "I remind you of her?"

"Yes," he said, then looked away. "But you could never be her, and I wouldn't think of you as her."

Maybe Madison looked like Ava, but he realized they were completely different. No one could replace Ava.

Madison gave a bitter smile. "Did you ever think I want to replace her?"

She thought, 'I never wanted to replace anyone. But now I know the truth. He cared for me because I reminded him of his ex-wife.'

"No one wants to be a substitute," Alexander said. "So, I think we shouldn't see each other anymore."

He feared seeing her too much would make him deceive himself into thinking she was Ava. His beloved was with another man, and he was in great pain.He was afraid he'd do something wrong.
