Chapter 532 No Compulsion

"She did get it, but..." Ava said helplessly, "My aunt squandered the money. She really didn't have the financial ability to take care of me, so she left me at the company entrance and disappeared. Fortunately, Mr. Mitchell saw me at that time and took me home. Since then, I've been living with the Mitchell family. When I grew up, I married Alexander."

"Was the Mitchell family adopting you to scout for a suitable match for Alexander?" Brandon asked with a frown.

Ava wasn't sure if she heard it wrong, but she felt Brandon's voice seemed a bit colder.

She quickly explained, "No, Scarlett didn't think that way. She treated me like her own granddaughter and was very good to me. Marrying Alex was my own choice; no one had forced me."

"So, you married him because you loved him, not because you were forced to repay a debt of gratitude?" Brandon pressed.

"Yes, I married him because I love him. The Mitchell family is wealthy and prestigious; many women want to be part of it. No one forces me."

She could candidly tell outsiders the truth that she loved Alexander, but she couldn't say it in Alexander's presence.

Moreover, she didn't want others to misunderstand the Mitchell family.

Seeing the seriousness in Ava's eyes, Brandon nodded. "That's good. Are you really living well with the Mitchell family?"

His tone softened a bit.

Ava responded, "Yes, they are all kind to me, treating me as if I were a part of their family. They have never wronged me."

She had always felt grateful to them.

Brandon stared at Ava in a daze. "How could they bear to see you suffer when you are so meek? Especially your aunt, she has been excessively harsh. You must have endured much hardship."

Seeing Brandon's serious expression when he mentioned her aunt, Ava felt a bit puzzled. Why did Brandon's mood change with her words? It seemed like he would be unhappy if someone bullied her, and if someone treated her well, he would be relieved. Was it just her illusion? She felt that Brandon cared about her in a way that didn't seem like he was just concerned about his nephew's wife, even if he treated his nephew like his own son.

Ava didn't want to talk about the unhappy things from her childhood. The year she spent with her aunt was indeed tough, but it was all in the past. It had been so many years, and she didn't hold much hatred for her aunt anymore. Those things couldn't hurt her anymore.

"Uncle, it's all in the past. I'm doing well now."

Brandon kept staring at Ava, looking a bit lost.

Ava felt a bit uncomfortable. She awkwardly smiled, "Uncle, what's wrong? Is there something on my face?"

Brandon's gaze gave her an indescribable feeling as if he was looking at another person through her.

Brandon snapped out of it, realizing his lapse. He awkwardly smiled, "Sorry. You look a lot like a friend I had in the past. Seeing you is like seeing her when she was young."

"Really? Do you still keep in touch with that friend?"

Brandon shook his head. "We lost touch a long time ago. I don't know where she is now."

Ava responded with a smile but said nothing more.

Soon, the waiter gently placed Brandon's dinner in front of him and then left.

Ava noticed that Brandon seemed a bit dazed when he mentioned that friend.

Brandon took a sip of soup and then said to Ava, "I heard from Vicky about your situation. It seems your ex-husband didn't treat you well."
