Chapter 149 A Promise of Protection

Upon their arrival at the restaurant, Ava promptly contacted the family chauffeur, requesting the swift delivery of the documents to the elderly woman.

The restaurant exuded a warm and welcoming ambiance, enhanced by the soft melodies emanating from a pianist on stage. The soothing music momentarily swept Ava into a world of tranquility.

"Ava, have you considered any names for your unborn child?" He initiated, attempting to sustain the conversation and divert her attention from her lingering melancholy.

"I haven't quite decided," Ava confessed, managing to muster a faint smile. "I'm still uncertain whether it'll be a boy or a girl."

"It seems you'll need to prepare names for both possibilities."

"Indeed."

"Do you harbor any preference for a boy or a girl?"

"I'm unsure," Ava admitted, her voice laced with unease.

"And what if you bear a son who inherits Alexander's traits, growing up to be a heartbreaker? What then?"

"Or what if it's a daughter, as sensitive as I am, left without a father's protection should she ever get hurt?"

A sudden surge of panic welled up within Ava. The prospect of raising her child as a single mother filled her with dread. She worried about the potential absence of paternal love leading her child astray, or the harsh whispers and judgment from society.

These were the daunting challenges she would inevitably face. Her impulsive decision to keep the baby now forced her to contemplate the child's future happiness. Despite her immense love for her unborn child, she was painfully aware of society's disdain for single mothers and children from broken homes.

She even questioned whether bringing the child into the world was the right decision. If her child were to suffer, she would bear the guilt of her own failure.

Observing Ava's anxious demeanor, William seemed to anticipate her internal turmoil, as though he possessed the ability to see right through her.

"If you're expecting a girl, who's to say she won't have protection? She'll have you as a mother, and..."

"And who else?" Ava interjected, her gaze meeting his. "Are you referring to Alexander? I won't let him know about this child. He doesn't deserve to."

"That's not what I meant. I certainly wasn't referring to Alexander."

"Then who are you implying?" Ava asked, her confusion evident in her gaze.

Setting down his cutlery, William looked at her earnestly. "If you're open to it, I can offer her protection."

Ava's heart fluttered in her chest. "What... what did you say?" A flicker of panic danced in her eyes.

"Oh, don't misunderstand," William quickly clarified, noticing her anxiety. "I'm not suggesting anything inappropriate. We're friends, aren't we? If it's a boy, I'll be his Uncle William, guiding him to become a good man. If it's a girl, I'll protect her. No one will dare to bully her. Ava, you're not alone. You have nothing to worry about."

Ava sat in silence, her heart pounding in her chest, her hands resting on her knees, palms slightly damp. She sensed something in William's gaze that stirred her nerves.

"William, you don't have to do this. I can't impose my child on you."

"Why make a fuss over friends helping each other? Unless you don't consider me a friend. Besides, if I ever needed your help, I believe you'd be willing to lend a hand, wouldn't you?"

"I..." Ava found herself speechless. Despite the brief period she had known William, she felt a sense of trust in him. He was a good man.
