Chapter 240 It Hurts to See Him Like This

Scarlett suddenly burst into laughter. "After all I've said, you're concerned about me hitting him. Seems like you still care about him a lot."
"Grandma, I don't," Ava Anderson said with an awkward twist of her mouth, "I'm just... a bit surprised, that's all."
"Oh, is that so? Just surprised?" Scarlett said dismissively. "Well, that's fine. Grandma taught him a lesson for you. The boy's probably still lying in bed right now."

Ava Anderson clenched her clothes tightly, her heart racing with anxiety at the thought of Alexander Mitchell getting hurt.

"Grandma, no matter what, you shouldn't hit him in anger. I'm not worried about him, I'm worried you'll harm yourself getting all worked up. It takes effort to hit someone."
Though Ava said this, her heart couldn't help but be filled with concern for Alexander Mitchell.
She never expected Alexander to say those things, taking all the blame upon himself.
In front of her, he always pointed fingers, but when facing others, especially Grandma, he readily admitted his faults.
What was he really thinking?

"Alright, girl, if you're worried about him, worry about him. Grandma can see right through you. Now that you're divorced, what do you plan on doing next?"
"I..." Ava Anderson hesitated for a moment before lifting her head and saying, "Actually, a lot has been happening lately. I've been feeling really down, so I thought it might be good to travel abroad for a few months, just to clear my head."

She needed to find a place to give birth to her child, concerned that her grandmother would insist on Alex remarrying her if she knew about the pregnancy now.

In such a scenario, there were only two choices: either Alex would remarry her for the sake of the child, which would make him resent her even more, or Alex wouldn't want to remarry her at all and would want her to terminate the pregnancy.

Both options were terrible, so she planned to wait until after the baby was born before telling her grandmother.

By that time, Alexander and Isabella might already be married – a done deal, and there would be no chance of her and Alex getting back together.

Then, she would simply tell her grandmother that she had someone she liked and, if necessary, she could hire a man to come around to show that she was taken.

She thought everything would then fall into place.

"Alright." Scarlett nodded, "You do need to get away and have some time to yourself. You've put up with so much. Travel to a few countries, have fun, and don't worry about spending the Mitchell family's money. Alex told me he gave you a five percent share of the stock, which is decent."

"Yes, Grandma, see, I'm not at a loss, so you don't have to worry about me," Ava Anderson said, her smile blooming like a flower.

The elderly woman lifted her hand gently caressing Ava's face, "You're such a sweet kid."

...

Ava had lunch with Scarlett and didn't return to her place until the afternoon.

After getting home, Ava felt uneasy, particularly thinking about how her grandmother had hit Alexander with her cane. The idea of it was discomforting – her grandmother's cane had a dragon's head and must have been painful to be struck by.

Ava took out her phone to call Alexander and check on him, but after thinking it over, she realized it wouldn't be appropriate to call him directly.

What right did she have to inquire?

That's right, she would call the butler.

She wasn't sure if Alexander had settled them into their new situation yet, and asking the butler should be fine, and she could also casually inquire about Alex's well-being.

Ava thought of this roundabout way to ease her own conscience.

She dialed the butler's number, and after a few rings, the call was answered, "Hello, Mrs. Mitchell."
