Chapter 810 "What did you say?"

"What did you just say?" Madison was shocked. "You can't refuse to meet me just because I look like your ex-wife. It's so unfair."

"How is that unfair? We barely know each other. You saved me, I saved you. We're even," Alexander replied.

Madison clenched her fists. "So you came here just to tell me this? Is that why you wanted to take a walk with me?"

"Yes," Alexander admitted. "I wanted to tell you this."

Madison closed her eyes, feeling hurt. She thought they could spend some time alone together, maybe even develop feelings. But his words crushed her hopes. She realized she had been overthinking it.

She couldn't help but feel heartbroken and started to cry. She didn't understand why it hurt so much, but maybe it was because she fell for Alexander the moment she saw him. Meeting him made her understand what love at first sight meant.

Seeing Madison's tears, Alexander's voice softened. "Don't be silly," he said gently. "I'm not worth it." He could tell Madison liked him; her gaze gave it away. Now it seemed he was right.

But then he thought about it more. He realized he was ridiculous. Ava had loved him deeply, yet he couldn't feel it. But he could easily sense when other women liked him. Maybe it was because he panicked and felt uncertain when facing someone he loved. But with someone he didn't love, he could be objective and detached.

Madison's tears made him feel a bit guilty.

Alexander said, "We haven't met many times, and I'm not a good man. I hurt my ex-wife deeply. I'm not worth anyone's affection."

Madison bit her lip and wiped her tears. "I don't care what kind of person you are. I know you still love your ex-wife, and I know you have no interest in me. But I have the right to like someone, don't I? Can you stop trying to persuade me? If I stop liking you, I want it to be my decision."

Alexander sighed, "Alright, but I can't give you anything. To me, you're just a stranger. Even if you look like Ava, you're not her."

"Stop talking." Madison covered her ears. "I know. Please, just stop, okay?"

Seeing her pain, Alexander said, "I'm sorry."

He knew he had hurt Madison, but he had to be clear. If she fell for him and he couldn't reciprocate, it would be more heartbreaking for her. Just like with Isabella, he had given her the wrong impression and ended up hurting her repeatedly. In the end, Isabella was just a tool he used. He hadn't contacted her for a long time and didn't know how she was after the wedding. But he had no desire to reach out. Apart from material compensation, he couldn't give Isabella anything.

Madison wiped her tears. "Do you really not want to see me again?"

Alexander nodded. "Yes."

Madison gritted her teeth. "Is it because I look like your ex-wife? Are you afraid you'll mistake me for her and develop feelings for me?"
