Chapter 162 Grandma Doesn’t Recognize

Several days had passed since the last incident. Ava found herself seated next to Scarlett, their fingers deftly working through the threads of a sweater they were knitting together. Over the past few days, Ava had spent a considerable amount of time with Scarlett, a comforting presence in her tumultuous life.

"Tell me, Ava," Scarlett began, her voice breaking the rhythmic clicking of the knitting needles, "when do you and Alex plan on finalizing your divorce?"

Ava responded with a soft chuckle, "Grandma, he's been swamped with work lately. As soon as he finds a moment, we'll sort it out. But don't worry, even after the divorce, I'll continue to visit. You'll always be my grandma."

Scarlett sighed, her concern evident, "I just want you to find happiness soon. How busy can he be that he can't spare an hour for a divorce?"

The irony wasn't lost on Ava. It used to be Scarlett who vehemently opposed their divorce, but now, she seemed to be the one advocating for it. What was once a sensitive topic was now discussed with surprising ease.

"He truly is swamped, Grandma," Ava tried to explain, "He's the CEO, there's a lot on his plate..."

"Enough," Scarlett interjected, her tone firm, "Don't keep things from me. I know he's been hospitalized."

Ava's heart skipped a beat, her hand jerking in surprise, narrowly avoiding a prick from her knitting needle. "Grandma, you... you know?"

She had been concealing the truth for days, fearing the impact it would have on the elderly woman. Yet, Scarlett had known all along. Perhaps it was futile to keep secrets from her.

"I understand why you kept quiet, Ava," Scarlett continued, "You didn't want to worry me. But remember, even though I've stepped back, I’m still aware of the company's affairs. Alex's absence was conspicuous. One phone call was all it took."

Scarlett was sharper than they had given her credit for.

"Grandma, don't worry," Ava reassured her, "He's due to be discharged today."

"I'm aware of that," Scarlett replied, her voice laced with concern, "That boy's stomach has always been his Achilles heel. If he doesn't take care of it, he might end up back in the hospital. He never looks after his health, always drinking."

Ava was taken aback, "Did you always know about his stomach problem?"

Scarlett nodded, "Yes, I've known."

Ava's brow furrowed in confusion, "Why am I the last to know? No one ever mentioned it to me."

"It was Alex's decision," Scarlett explained, "He didn't want to worry you. He believed he could manage his health issues in time. An additional person worrying wouldn't help, so I respected his wishes."

Ava felt a pang of guilt, "Grandma, you should have told me sooner." If she had known about Alexander's health condition, she would have ensured his well-being, particularly steering him clear of alcohol during their year-long marriage.

Scarlett sighed, "What good would it have done? Now that you're getting divorced, it breaks my heart."

The mention of divorce stirred no resentment in Ava, only guilt towards Scarlett.

"Let's not dwell on these unhappy matters," Scarlett consoled, "Alex's hospitalization was his own doing, and it has nothing to do with you."

Scarlett seemed to have accepted the situation.

"Grandma, Alex is getting discharged today," Ava informed her, "I plan on discussing the divorce papers with him this afternoon."

Scarlett chuckled bitterly at this, nodding her approval, "Alright, do as you please. Just promise me that after your divorce, you'll both join me for a meal. "

"Of course, Grandma," Ava assured her. She would certainly fulfill such a simple wish for Scarlett.

"Ava, remember," Scarlett said, her voice firm, "even if you divorce Alex, in my eyes, you'll always be the Mitchell family's one and only granddaughter-in-law. I only recognize you; the other women mean nothing to me."

Ava was deeply moved by Scarlett's words, "Grandma," she said, taking Scarlett's hand, "even if you don't acknowledge Isabella, what if Alex finds someone better someday?"

Scarlett's voice was heavy with emotion, "Ava, Alex won’t find anyone better than you. You are his perfect match. I won't let you be mistreated."

Ava felt a twinge of unease, "Grandma, what do you mean?"

Scarlett returned to her knitting, her voice cryptic, "It's nothing. You'll find out at lunch."
