Chapter 289: I Did My Best

"I don't know." She heard the urgency in Ava Anderson's voice and asked, "Is something wrong? Do you need him for something?"

"It's nothing serious, just that he's not answering his phone and I'm a bit concerned."

"I see." Victoria Bennett thought for a moment, noticing Ava's evident concern for her brother.

"Ava, let me try calling my brother. I'll see if I can find him and then I'll get back to you, okay?"

"That works for me. Let me know as soon as you find him, you can send a message too."

"Alright."

After their conversation, they each hung up.

Victoria Bennett dialed William Bennett's number, but he didn't answer.

Strange, could he be ignoring the calls on purpose because he was upset about something this morning?

Now Victoria Bennett was also feeling anxious.

She decided to call William Bennett's assistant.

Upon answering, the voice on the other end was respectful, "Miss Bennett, is there something I can do for you?"

"Is my brother at the office?"

The assistant's voice became quieter, "Miss Bennett, Mr. Bennett is indeed at the office, but..."
"But what?" Victoria Bennett asked bewilderedly, "Why are you whispering like a thief? Speak up!"

"The boss, Mr. Bennett, I don't know what got into him today, he's like a ticking time bomb, totally blowing his top off, it's pretty scary. There's something I need to tell you about later, but right now Mr. Bennett is waiting for me. If I'm late, I bet he'll chew my head off. Sorry, I gotta go; I'm scared to death."

The assistant, trembling with fear, hung up the phone.

Victoria Bennett knew why William Bennett was on edge; it was probably because of something that happened this morning.

She never thought her brother could be so flustered.

If Ava Anderson saw him like this, she'd find it amusing for sure.

Exactly, only then would she see the real side of her brother.

With a sly twist in her eyes, Victoria Bennett made a quick call to Ava Anderson.

Ava Anderson had been anxiously awaiting Victoria Bennett's call.

When Victoria finally called, Ava answered swiftly, "Hey, Vicky, what's up? Did you get ahold of him?"

"I found out where my brother is, but I didn't speak to him directly; I talked to his assistant instead," Victoria Bennett replied.

"How is he doing now?" Ava Anderson asked eagerly, "Is he alright?"

"Well..." Victoria hesitated.

"What's the matter? Tell me quickly."

Ava's urgent tone made it clear she cared deeply for her brother.

And to think that her brother was feeling so insecure and panicked.

"It's just," Victoria began with difficulty, "The assistant said that my brother is at the office and he's not okay. I wanted to ask what exactly happened, but the assistant hurriedly hung up, as if something terrible had occurred."

"Did you try calling back?" Ava pressed.

"I did call back, but nobody answered," Victoria answered.

Oh heavens, please forgive her for this lie, but she was doing it for her brother's love life, with the best intentions.

A growing sense of panic filled Ava Anderson.

Could something serious have happened?

"You just said your brother was at the office. Why don't you try calling someone else there to find out what's really happened - whether it's work-related or if there's been a threat to his safety."

Victoria Bennett clenched her fists, agitated.
Wow, John's future sister-in-law cares so much about his personal safety; that's really awesome.

"How about this? Let's go check out the company and see what's going on. Just calling can only give us so much information, and now I can't even reach his assistant by phone. I need to see things for myself to be at ease. Do you want to come with me?" Victoria Bennett seized the opportunity.

Oh, brother, oh brother, I've managed to trick your future wife into coming along. The rest is up to you, I've done all I can as your sister.
