Chapter 189 Take Me Away
An hour had passed.
Ava's eyelids fluttered open, her gaze landing on the figure standing by her hospital bed. The sight of William startled her, and she wondered if she was still trapped in a dream. Her voice, hoarse and weak, broke the silence. "William, why are you here?"
"Ava," William responded, taking a seat beside her bed. "How are you feeling?"
"I..." Suddenly, a memory flashed in Ava's mind, and her hand instinctively flew to her stomach. "My baby... is it okay?"
"The baby is fine, Ava. You need not worry. But you... standing out in the rain like that, you're fortunate someone found you at the hospital entrance. What if it had been somewhere else?" William's voice held a note of reproach.
Ava's response was a bitter, pained smile.
"What's wrong? What happened?" William's concern was evident in his voice.
"How did you even get here?" Ava deflected, her initial question still unanswered.
"I called you, and it was the doctor who answered. He told me about your condition, so I rushed over."
"So that's how it is," Ava murmured, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. It was ironic that whenever she needed someone by her side, it was always William who showed up, while Alexander was off with Isabella. The thought was enough to make her want to laugh.
Alexander was undoubtedly still with Isabella, the woman who always seemed to be his top priority.
Ava felt the sting of tears threatening to spill over.
"What's wrong?" William leaned in closer, his face etched with worry.
"William, I need to leave this place. Can you take me away?" Ava's voice was barely a whisper. The hospital, the very air she shared with Alexander, was suffocating her. The cruel irony of lying sick in bed while her husband was in the same hospital, accompanying another woman, was not lost on her.
William had many questions, but seeing Ava's state and sensing her urgency, he simply nodded. "Okay, I'll take you away."
Before they left, William took care of the necessary paperwork and signed the required documents. He also made a point to check with the doctor.
The doctor, mistaking William for Ava's husband, admonished him. "As a man, you should take better care of your wife. She's pregnant and has been out in the rain, and she's not in good spirits."
William glanced at Ava, who was oblivious to the conversation. To the doctor, he promised, "I'll be more careful next time."
The doctor continued his lecture, emphasizing the importance of caring for a pregnant woman's emotional well-being. "Carrying a child for ten months is not easy. As her husband, you should offer her more care. Otherwise, her negative emotions can harm not just her health but also affect the child."
William offered a humble smile. "I understand. I will surely take good care of my wife and child."
Once the doctor left, William reentered Ava's room.
"What did the doctor say just now?" Ava asked.
"Nothing much, just that you need to get plenty of rest and keep warm."
"Oh, okay," Ava responded, oblivious to the fact that William had been cast in the role of her husband.
William assisted Ava out of the hospital. As they navigated the corridor, he spotted Alexander rushing by.
"Ava, isn't that Alexander? What's he doing in the hospital?" William asked, suspecting that Ava's fainting spell had something to do with Alexander. What kind of cruel trick had he played this time?
"Let's avoid him," Ava asserted. "I don't want to see him; let's get out of here."
William was aware of the complicated dynamics between Ava and Alexander. However, that evening, the tension between them seemed even more palpable.
