Chapter 165 Accusations and Denials
"Grandma, why would you mention that surgery ”“so abruptly?” Alexander’s voice was laced with protest. “Isabella has already endured so much. Please, don’t...”
“Silence!” Scarlett’s voice sliced through ’””“’his words like a knife. “I am addressing Miss Harrington. Why are you ””“interjecting?”
“Indeed, Alex,” Mia’s voice joined the fray, “Allow Grandmother to finish. ’Relax. She’s not about to launch an attack right here”.”
Alexander had no choice but to Swallow his words.
Isabella was A bundle of nerves.
“Miss Harrington, is your current ill-health a result of that surgery’?” Scarlett’s voice was relentless. “I’ve heard there were also ”“””“complications with your heart. Please, respond.”
Isabella nodded her affirmation, “Yes.”
“I see,” Scarlett’s voice was steady, “It’s been said that complications arose during your surgery due to the ’delayed arrival of the donor, causing one of your lungs to fail. And the reason for this delay, as the rumors go, is because I, this old woman, deliberately meddled to use your surgery as leverage over ”Alexander.”
Isabella’s face drained of color, “Madam, why would you bring up such a thing so suddenly? I’m afraid I don’t understand ”“’your implication.”
Alexander appeared visibly disturbed, “Grandmother, those events are in the past, let’s not ”dredge them up.”
“I must address this, I need to clear my name. I ’refuse to bear the blame for this,” Scarlett’s brow furrowed, “Miss Harrington, do you believe this to be true, and did you tell Ava that I was ”the one responsible?"
Ava was at a loss for words, she had not anticipated the elderly woman to broach such a Topic.
However, it was indeed a matter that needed clarification. If it wasn’t Scarlett, it was unjust to allow Isabella to make unfounded accusations.
“Grandmother, Isabella didn’t say that, you shouldn’t—"
“Silence,” Scarlett cut Alexander off once more, “Did I ask for your opinion? When did you learn to interrupt your elders in such a manner? Is this woman teaching you to disrespect your ”superiors?”
“Grandmother, I was merely trying to reason with the situation.”
“I too am discussing the facts. This Isabella has the audacity to claim that I obstructed her surgery, to manipulate you. Tell me, are you aware of this, did you believe her”?”
“Enough,” Alexander’s voice was laced with irritation, he reached for Isabella’s hand, intending to lead her away.
“Stop right there, no one leaves until we resolve this matter today, or I will not restrain myself!"
Scarlett's hand slammed onto the table, her anger tangible; she meant business.
Isabella, terrified into silence, lowered her gaze, her body trembling.
Ava felt a surge of disgust as Isabella played her innocent act. She saw right through the woman, who seemed to only know how to play the victim.
"Gran, don't upset yourself," Ava tried to soothe. "It's not worth your health."
"Ava, why are you falsely accusing me?" Isabella's voice was choked with sobs. "I never claimed that the old lady was behind this. How can you twist my words?"
Ava snorted, "Me, twist your words? You explicitly told me that grandma used her influence to intentionally obstruct the lung transplant to manipulate Alex. I didn't misconstrue anything."
"You did!" Isabella's voice rose in a wail, "I merely suggested that it could be the case. I wasn't certain about the details. You told grandma something different. Isn't that defamation?"
