Chapter 300
Keeping It Real
"What is it?" William Bennett asked.
Ava Anderson thought of some things, but she wasn't sure, and it seemed imprudent to speak out rashly at the moment, so she shook her head, "Nothing, I'll help you tidy up. These documents are important; don't just throw them around next time."
Ava Anderson stooped to pick up the papers from the floor. "No need, Ava, I got it."
William Bennett quickly moved to help her pick up the documents. As both reached for the same paper, their hands accidentally touched.
Ava Anderson retracted her hand as if she'd been shocked and gave an awkward smile, then handed over the documents to William Bennett.
"Will, I should head back now. I've got some things to take care of."
William Bennett asked, "Aren't you going to wait for Victoria Bennett? I can call her and ask her to come back."
"No need; I have some matters to attend to, and I won't be able to join her for lunch today. Maybe another time."
"Where you headed? I can give you a lift," William Bennett insisted.
"No need, I'll just take a cab," Ava Anderson replied.
"How can that be okay? I'll have my driver take you. That's the only way I'll be at ease."
Ava hesitated to decline but concerned he might worry, she nodded in agreement, "Alright then."
...
After Ava Anderson arrived back home, her first action was to call Alexander Mitchell.
Once the call connected, she spoke with a chill in her voice, "Mr. Mitchell, it's bad enough you answered my phone this morning, but to do so without telling me? Because of that, I missed important calls."
There was silence on the other end for a few seconds before he spoke, "I forgot."
Ava was speechless, suspecting he was making excuses. Others might forget, but she knew how strong his memory was.
"Fine, even if you forgot, what did you tell my friend when you picked up? Did you say you were my husband?"
Alexander Mitchell must have said that; otherwise, why would Victoria Bennett think her husband took the call? It had to be something Alexander Mitchell claimed.
"Isn't it more convenient that way? Would you rather I said your ex-husband answered your phone?" he retorted.
"Then you should've been honest and said ex-husband when that is the truth."
"Okay, I answered the phone and forgot to tell you. So tell me, what will satisfy you?"
"I..." Ava didn't even know why she was making this call; she just felt uncomfortable, sensing that this man often took liberties.
"Never mind; there won't be a next time," she said. "You take care; I'm hanging up."
"Wait," Alexander Mitchell stopped her.
"What is it now?"
"Are you mad at me?"
Hearing his question made Ava laugh a little. Being mad at him was not something new; she was beyond feeling anger anymore.
"There's nothing to be mad about. It's not important."
The words "not important" stabbed Alexander Mitchell's heart like needles.
After ending the call, Ava tossed her phone aside and sat on the sofa. She cradled her belly and murmured to herself while gently stroking it, "Baby, is your father a strange man?"
"I'm not sure if he'll be a good father, but don't worry, no matter what, your mother will always take care of you."
"Maybe mom will tell him when the time is right," she mused.
"But it's complicated now. He's about to marry another woman. If I suddenly tell him he has a child, it's like I'm ruining his happiness."
