Chapter 386 Truly Magical
Mia chided, her tone a blend of irritation and amusement, "You promised to call Ava, you silly child."
The sight of Alexander in his current state was a paradox, eliciting both laughter and sympathy. His predicament was entirely of his own making.
"Oh, right, I was supposed to call Ava," Alexander chuckled, his handsome face pale and weary yet brimming with anticipation. This time, he dialed the correct number, reaching out to Ava. But all he was met with was a busy signal on the other end.
The automated voice on the line echoed: [Sorry, the number you dialed is currently in use. Please try again later...]
Alexander listened, and listened until the voice prompt stopped, and the phone screen reverted to the dialing page.
With a flick of his wrist, Alexander tossed his phone onto the sofa, a burst of laughter escaping him, tinged with both sorrow and helplessness. "I remember now. Ava and I are divorced. She's no longer my wife."
It was as if he had awoken from a dream, only to be confronted with a harsh reality he wished to deny.
Alexander felt a numbness creeping in, a disbelief at the unfolding events. Mia, unable to hold back, reminded him, "You silly boy, you need to get your facts straight. It wasn't Ava who divorced you, it was you who divorced Ava. Have you forgotten? You were adamant about it."
Despite her sympathy for Alexander, Mia couldn't let her conscience defend him. Alexander responded with a bitter chuckle. "Yes, I wanted the divorce, but isn't it for the best? Ava doesn't love me anyway."
Alexander slumped onto the sofa, clutching a cushion, his body trembling. "Mom, she doesn't love me."
"Did she tell you she doesn't love you?" Mia asked.
Alexander nodded, his demeanor akin to a lonely, pitiful child. "Yes, she said she hasn't loved me for ten years. Since she couldn't love me for that long, what can I do? Why did she erase my contact and ignore me? Why doesn't she want to see me?"
"I thought she just wanted to divorce me, but now I realize she actually despises me." Alexander murmured, his eyes slowly closing. "She really... despises me."
Mia, moved by Alexander's sorrowful confession, gently patted his shoulder. "You're truly foolish. Ava always wanted us to communicate, to connect emotionally. But in reality, it was you two who needed to talk."
As she spoke, Mia removed Alexander's damp jacket. "You two never opened up, never had a proper conversation."
"Many times," Alexander mumbled, his eyes still shut tight, "She wouldn't let me kiss her, or hold her, or even hold her hand. Once we divorced, she didn't want me anymore. She's so mean."
Listening to Alexander's pitiful lament, Mia couldn't help but giggle. He sounded like a jilted woman, yet in truth, he was the one who had abandoned his wife.
From a mother's perspective, Mia felt a pang of sympathy for Alexander. But she couldn't suppress her laughter. If Alexander was so insistent on a divorce, wasn't this what he deserved?
Why was it Ava's fault when Alexander narrated the story? Who was the one who initiated the divorce? If she didn't know the truth, Mia would have assumed that Ava was the one who wanted the divorce, leaving this perfect husband heartbroken. But the reality was the opposite. Alexander was the one who initiated the divorce, seeking another woman, and now he was the one feeling aggrieved. It was truly magical.
