Chapter 236 All Overheard

Ava's head was spinning, and she wished she could slap Alexander hard, as he was getting more and more insufferable.

"Cough, cough, cough."

A prompting cough came, causing Ava and Alexander to freeze, then slowly turn their heads.

Steward was standing nearby, supporting the old lady. It was unclear when they arrived or how much of the heated exchange they had heard.

It wasn't until the butler's deliberate coughing that they stopped arguing, both displaying varying degrees of astonishment on their faces.

The old lady stood there, silent, glaring at them.

Whether her gaze fell upon Alexander or Ava, it was marked by anger.

She clutched her cane furiously, thumped it hard on the floor, huffed coldly, and turned to the butler, saying, "Take me back to my room."

After escorting the old lady back to her room, Steward emerged to find Ava rushing over, anxious.

With a stern face, Steward closed the door and looked up at them, saying, "The lady wishes to rest now. You should both leave."

Ava blurted out, anxious, "How is Grandma doing?"

Steward replied indifferently, "The lady is understandably upset right now."

Alexander admitted, "I know Grandma must be upset. We're at fault, but she has already handed over our family documents and knew about the divorce. She had been urging me to proceed, and I came here today to inform her about it. I just didn't expect her to find out this way."

"Mr. Mitchell, no need to overexplain," Steward said. "She's already clued in. But next time you want to argue with Mrs. Mitchell, do try to keep it private. The old lady has seen enough excitement in her years—no need to add any more."

"I'm so sorry," Ava replied with a flush of shame. "I promise it won't happen again."

The matter of who started it, whether it was Alexander or not, was now irrelevant.

The consequences had spiraled out of control.

"Both of you, please head back home," Steward suggested. "The matriarch doesn't want to see anyone right now. Staying will only agitate her further."

Ava sighed, "Alright then, I'll head back. If grandma needs anything, please call me immediately."

Steward nodded affirmatively.

At the doorway, Ava addressed the room through the closed door, "Grandma, I apologize. It was my fault today. Once you've cooled off, I'll explain everything. I'll come back tomorrow morning; please remember to have dinner and rest early tonight."

Having said that, Ava turned and walked away.

Alexander didn't utter a word. He just cast a silent glance at his grandmother's door and then left.

Outside, Ava headed swiftly to her car, reaching to open the door when Alexander suddenly approached, slamming the car door shut and grabbing her hand.

"What are you doing?" Ava demanded, her brows furrowed in anger.

"Are you satisfied now?" he asked.

Staring back at Alexander's accusatory eyes, Ava offered a cold laugh. "What, is it all my fault now? Is that what you’re saying? That it's all because of me?"

"Even if it's not all your fault, don't you think you bear some responsibility?" Alexander retorted sternly. "We're not even divorced, and you're spending nights at another man's place. If you hadn't gone, none of this would've happened!”
