Chapter 24 Morning Sick Again?
Alexander's voice was cold, and the veins on his hand gripping the steering wheel bulged.
"Just an acquaintance. He's a major shareholder at Rivershade University."
"And then?" Alexander pressed.
"That's it. I have nothing to do with him. What do you want me to say?"
"So today was the first time you met him?"
She had seen him before but wasn't sure if she should tell Alexander. Finally, she spoke, "Yes, the first time."
She didn't tell the truth because she was afraid Alexander would keep asking questions.
The veins on Alexander's hand seemed to relax, and the anger in his eyes began to subside.
"You shouldn't have acted that way today," Ava said, angry. "I fell, and he helped me. You humiliated him."
Although Alexander didn't say it outright, his actions, tone, and look made it clear to anyone that he was targeting William. To Ava, William had saved her child.
"So now you're blaming me for a man you just met?"
They had known each other for ten years. Was he less important than William?
"This has nothing to do with how long we've known each other. I'm just stating the facts."
"Stating the facts? You're clearly biased towards him!"
Ava laughed in frustration. "So, between Isabella and me, who are you biased towards?"
If that were the case, why would he propose a divorce? He was the one who had been partial, but why blame her now?
Alexander frowned. "Why bring Isabella up out of nowhere?"
"Then why target someone else out of nowhere?"
Alexander slammed on the brakes, pulling the car to the side of the road. The car shook violently. Even though Ava was wearing a seatbelt, she lurched forward. Already feeling unwell, she almost threw up.
"Alexander, what are you doing?"
"Ava, how many times do I have to remind you? We're not divorced yet!"
"You!" Ava wanted to say it had nothing to do with whether they were divorced or not. But seeing Alexander's dark expression, she knew continuing would only make him angrier. She didn't know when he had become so unreasonable.
Suddenly, a wave of nausea hit her. Ava quickly unbuckled her seatbelt, opened the car door, and started dry heaving.
Alexander quickly got out and crouched beside her.
Ava clutched the fabric at her chest, taking deep breaths. Luckily, she hadn't had anything that morning, or she would have made a mess.
"It's been days. Haven't you taken any medicine?" He gently rubbed her back.
Ava, worried he might suspect something, turned her head and pretended to be angry. "It's your fault. The sudden braking made me feel sick. I get carsick easily."
As he heard Ava's complaint, Alexander's face stiffened. All his anger seemed to be doused with cold water. He helped Ava back into the car and rolled down all the windows.
He fastened her seatbelt. "I'll take you to the hospital."
"No need. I just felt nauseous because of your sudden braking."
"Really?" Though her explanation made sense, he still felt suspicious.
Ava, hiding her anxiety, said, "Why would I lie to you? If I were really unwell, why wouldn't I go to the hospital? Don't you think I care more about it than you do?"
After a long silence, Alexander spoke, "I hope so."
After driving for a while, Ava asked, "Why did you come to the school today?"
"Because I promised you."
Yes, he had promised her. He always kept his promises.
As for the things he couldn't do, he never promised her, like loving her.
