Chapter 926 Smiling at Him
Suddenly, someone yelled out, "There's someone under the desert!"
Alexander heard the shout and bolted over like a man possessed.
He tripped a few times but scrambled back up each time, not slowing down. Finally, he got there and a piece of clothing was sticking out from the sand.
Alexander's heart felt like it was in a vice, and his eyes filled with panic and fear.
Despair and anguish hit him like waves, threatening to drown him.
He dropped to his knees, his hands shaking as they hit the ground.
Then, like a madman, he started digging frantically at the sand, his heart racing with panic and fear.
Each handful of sand felt like an eternity, tearing his heart apart.
"Mr. Mitchell, stop!" Someone tried to pull him away.
Alexander's hands were a bloody mess, his fingers torn up and nails gone.
"Let go of me! Let go!" he screamed.
Despite not eating or sleeping, he somehow found the strength to break free and went back to digging, kneeling in the sand.
His fingertips sifted through the grains, desperately searching for any sign of hope.
"Mr. Mitchell, we'll use tools. Please step aside," a man said.
"No!" Alexander shouted, "You'll hurt her. Move, all of you!"
He was like a man possessed, clawing at the dirt, his eyes bloodshot and wild.
The people around him didn't know what to say. They wanted to tell him that if someone was buried, they were probably already dead, but that would only make things worse.
He looked completely unhinged.
A few people put on gloves and started digging with their hands too. Finally, they cleared away the sand.
A corpse appeared. The body was already decomposing, giving off a foul smell.
A few people covered their noses, looking disgusted.
"Mr. Mitchell, it's not Ms. Anderson. Don't worry," a man said.
Alexander's breath caught. It wasn't Ava, but a frail, emaciated man.
The man was killed and buried a while ago, as the body was already decomposing.
Alexander's body shook, his eyes flickering with mixed emotions, and he felt a strange sense of relief.
The heavy burden seemed to lift, his shoulders relaxed, and the pain in his heart eased a bit.
But the search wasn't over. Ava's whereabouts still haunted him, though this scare had momentarily shattered his resolve.
Still, knowing it wasn't Ava brought him some relief.
He collapsed to the ground, all his strength gone. His body was exhausted, his consciousness fading, and his eyes blurred as he looked up at the sky, a vast expanse of blue stretching out like a giant canvas.
The sky extended to the horizon, like an endless ocean, clear and serene. White clouds floated like feathers, dancing with the wind.
Amidst the clouds, a figure appeared—it was Ava's face, smiling at him.
