Chapter 55 Taking the Initiative to Make Amends
Alexander lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep.
As he thought about Ava's emotional outburst before she left, he felt restless, as if a large hole had been torn in his chest that nothing could fill. Various complex emotions stirred him restlessly.
He lifted the covers, got out of bed, and headed to Ava's room. After hesitating for a long time, he knocked gently on the door, "Ava, are you asleep?"
It was very quiet inside.
It was already late, so she should be asleep.
He turned to leave, but then thought better of it and returned to knock on the door again, "Ava, I have something to say to you; can I come in?"
It was still quiet inside.
He sighed, "I know you don't want to see me right now. I want to say I'm sorry. I shouldn't have spoken to you like that today."
"I've been doing the wrong things and saying the wrong things all day. I even ended up hurting you. I know I'm not a good man, and I'm really sorry."
"If I could do it over again, I would have told you everything from the start. I wouldn't have hurt you. But there are no do-overs."
"Can I come in? I want to talk to you properly. We can talk calmly, without arguing, okay? I feel like there's a misunderstanding between us. The diamond bracelet, for instance, I picked it out myself; I didn't ask anyone else."
"Ava." He knocked on the door again, "If you don't say anything, I'll take it as your agreement. Can I come in?"
Alexander gripped the doorknob and opened the door.
The light in the room was still on, but it was empty. The covers on the bed were still pulled back.
He went to the bathroom door and found that it was open as well, and there was no one inside.
Alexander was a bit worried. Where could she have gone so late? He went downstairs and looked around, but couldn't find her anywhere.
At that moment, a servant who was still awake passed by and asked, "Mr. Mitchell, do you need anything?"
"Have you seen Ava?" Alexander asked with a frown.
"I saw Mrs. Mitchell drive off."
"Did she say where she was going?"
"Mrs. Mitchell didn't say anything. I just saw her drive away from a distance."
Alexander suddenly had a bad feeling. He quickly went upstairs, grabbed his cell phone, and dialed Ava's number.
Although the call went through, she didn't answer and immediately declined the call.
Alexander called again and was declined again. He immediately sent her a text message.
[Where are you now? What are you doing out so late? Why aren't you answering my calls!]
After sending the text, he made a few more calls to her. Finally, someone picked up.
Alexander was somewhat annoyed, "Why do you keep declining my calls? Where did you go so late?!"
"Mr. Mitchell, Ava doesn't want to talk to you right now. You better not disturb her."
Alexander heard the voice on the other end and frowned. This wasn't Ava's voice, "Who are you?"
"I'm her friend, Amelia."
Amelia?
He seemed to have seen her at the wedding, but he didn't know her well.
"Where's Ava?"
"She's resting at my house right now. Don't disturb her."
Just then, a voice came from the hallway, "Quick, the patient needs a blood transfusion!"
"What's that noise?" Alexander asked.
"I'm watching TV." Amelia quickly covered the phone and said, "Ava's already asleep. Let's talk about it tomorrow. Goodbye."
Alexander wanted to say something else, but Amelia had already hung up. The more he thought about it, the stranger it seemed. He clearly heard something about a patient needing a blood transfusion on the phone.
How could there be such a sound at Amelia's house?
She said she was watching TV, but it was so late, and Ava was already asleep. Why would the volume be so loud?
If he wasn't mistaken, Ava must be at the hospital!
Alexander's fingers began to tremble.
Had something happened to her?
