Chapter 143 His Responsibility

As Alexander observed the woman crumpled on the floor, her tears cascading down her cheeks, the tempest in his eyes began to ebb. In its place, guilt began to seep in, slowly filling the void.

'What wrong has Isabella truly committed?' He pondered. He was the one who had pledged matrimony to her, even contemplating the dissolution of his marriage with Ava for her sake. Was he now going to mock Isabella for desiring to share his bed? The notion seemed ludicrous.

His initial fury towards Isabella had gradually deflated, leaving him speechless and bereft of further accusations.

'Given that the sleeping pill had rendered him unconscious, it was logical to conclude that nothing untoward could have occurred between them. However, to an outsider, the situation might appear in a different light.'

Isabella's sobs gradually grew hoarse, her breaths becoming ragged until, with a soft thud, she collapsed onto the floor, clutching her chest.

"Isabella!" Alexander swiftly crossed the room, lifting her gently into his arms and settling her onto the bed.

"Alex, you don't blame me, do you? I only wanted to help you sleep better, I meant no harm—it was just a sleeping pill."

Isabella was not naive enough to drug him with anything more potent. Had she done so, Alexander would have thought less of her. Hence, she had opted for a mere sleeping pill, not anticipating Ava's unexpected appearance.

As Isabella was basking in her triumph over Ava, Alexander's voice sliced through her thoughts. "Why did Ava find us together like that?"

Her heart plummeted.

"Alex, you don't think I tipped her off, do you?"

She sat up abruptly, "I swear, I turned off my phone just like you, I didn't contact anyone, and I have no idea why Ava showed up—it wasn't me. You can verify it if you don't believe me."

"Oh, right." A realization dawned on Isabella. "The man with Ava, he might work here. He could've let her in. Alex, you must trust me, I wouldn't do that."

This was perhaps one of the rare instances when Isabella was genuinely telling the truth.

Why would she invite interruptions during their intimate moments?

"Just rest for a while."

"Alex, do you believe me?" Isabella clung to his hand.

Alexander gently stroked her hair. "Don't overthink it."

His belief in her words or lack thereof did not alter the fact that the responsibility was his to bear.

Isabella wiped the tears from her cheeks.

"Ava just declared she won't proceed with the divorce. She finally has the marriage certificates, and you can't let this opportunity slip. I can sense the situation between you two escalating, and if you don't separate now, it will only worsen."

Isabella couldn't dismiss the fact that Ava had obtained the documents but was refusing a divorce. 'Ava simply wants to make my life unbearable.' Isabella mused.

Alexander withdrew his hand, tucking the blanket around her, "Rest now, I'll handle everything."

"Alex, then tell me how you're going to resolve this. Can you divorce her today? She seems determined to prolong this, and it's causing pain to all three of us!"

The day's events were a double-edged sword for Isabella. While they caused Ava distress, Ava was also using the situation to stall the divorce, which frustrated Isabella.

'Ava is too cunning, always exploiting loopholes.' Isabella brooded.

"Alright," Alexander's voice held a hint of impatience, "I said I'll handle it. Just rest here."

With that, Alexander exited the room.

Isabella yearned to call out to him, but witnessing his determined departure, she swallowed her frustrations.
