Chapter 518 They Understood Each Other
"Why do you think I wouldn't agree?" Alexander asked.
"It's not that you wouldn't agree. It's that I don't know if you would, so I wanted to ask you privately."
"You are really cautious. May I assume that you care about my feelings? Otherwise, you could have just told me to go. You could have said that since Scarlett is my own grandma, I have the responsibility to fulfill her wishes."
"Don't get me wrong. It's not about whether I care about your feelings. I believe it's a matter of respect. We are divorced and can't behave as we once did. Additionally, visiting her is your duty, but you are not obliged to fulfill her desires for comparison. You have the right to decline, and it doesn't reflect poorly on you as a grandson," Ava said calmly.
"So, you think grandma shouldn't use us to fulfill her desires for comparison?"
"No matter whether she should or shouldn't do it, it has already happened. I can empathize with her feelings. So, if I have the ability to fulfill her wishes, I'm more than willing to do it."
"Aren't you afraid that she will become more demanding?"
" Even if she becomes more demanding, what's the most she could do? Maybe just ask us to meet more frequently. As long as we understand it in our hearts, it's fine."
The true weight of these words was far greater than what was merely spoken.
Her last two sentences sounded familiar. It was something often heard between couples when they expressed their love for each other, not caring about others' feelings as long as they understood each other.
However, as these words escaped Ava's lips at this very moment, they took on a starkly different meaning. Both of them were well aware that their bond was irreparably broken. The fleeting calmness now present was solely for the sake of Scarlett.
Just as a cloth covering a mess on the ground didn't make the mess disappear, it merely temporarily concealed it. Once unveiled, it remained the same, perhaps even worse.
"Yes, we understand each other," he said with a tone of both sentiment and helplessness.
"So, are you willing?" Ava asked cautiously.
"This is something within my capabilities," Alexander said, "I have no problem as long as you don't."
He was willing to do anything to be with Ava, no matter how difficult. Attending a wedding was a minor task in comparison. His concern lay not in his willingness, but in Ava's. Yet, they found themselves in a paradoxical state, worrying about each other's reluctance, only to discover their shared consent.
Ava nodded. "Alright, but we might have to act very close at the wedding. I hope that no matter what happens, we don't have any illusions because it's just an act."
It was preferable for her to address the harsh truths earlier on, to prevent Alexander from developing illusions in the end.
Alexander nodded. "Understood."
In fact, he thought to himself, what illusions could he have about Ava? Only genuine sadness.
"Then it's settled. Let's go out and tell Scarlett that we agree to attend the wedding as a couple."
"Okay," Alexander asked, "Is there anything else?"
Ava shook her head. "No, let's go out. We shouldn't keep Scarlett waiting."
Just as Ava was about to open the door, Alexander suddenly grabbed her hand. "Wait a minute."
Ava looked up, trying to pull her hand back, but Alexander held on tightly. She had a bad feeling. "What do you want to do now?"
