Chapter 100 We're Getting Married
Hathaway's hands shook as she glanced at Darwin, desperately trying to read his intentions. Something felt amiss. Why would he suddenly utter such words, offering her the power to end the engagement?
"I've said everything that needs to be said. Is there anything else you wish to say?"
Darwin rose from his seat.
Anniston furrowed her brow. "Where are you going? The assistant is already on the plane to Armie Country!"
"He has something to discuss with me, so I'll go to the company first," Darwin replied, walking away swiftly without pause.
Hathaway felt distraught.
Anniston tried to console her with a few words and hurried after Darwin.
"Darwin, how long will you continue causing trouble? Will you go so far as to offend the Ross family and ruin the engagement?"
Despite Darwin's recent erratic behavior, Anniston still had some insight into the child she had raised. No matter how much Darwin liked Fiona, she believed it wouldn't jeopardize his engagement with Hathaway.
But now...
Anniston grew uncertain.
"Why would I sabotage the engagement?" Darwin glanced at his mother and smiled. "It will only be Hathaway who terminates the engagement on her own."
Anniston sensed a hint of conspiracy. "What... what are you planning?"
"Mother, rest assured, I'll prioritize the interests of Solomons and the Solomon family. I won't let them incur any losses," Darwin paused, then reached out and gently adjusted Anniston's askew diamond brooch. "By the way, I heard you recently acquired some questionable items from the black market."
Anniston's heart turned cold. These so-called questionable items from the black market were a few hired mercenaries. Anniston had always assumed she had been very discreet, but she hadn't expected... Darwin had noticed them long ago.
"I simply wanted to have a few more bodyguards!" Anniston defended herself through clenched teeth.
Darwin regarded her emotionlessly. "If you needed bodyguards, why didn't you just tell me? I would've sent some over."
"No... no need!"
"Listen, am I discussing this with you?" Darwin inquired.
In an instant, Anniston felt as though she had plunged into an icy cavern. She gazed at her tall and handsome son, who no longer bore the slightest resemblance to the child who used to seek her attention.
"You speak of prioritizing the interests of Solomon and Solomons... but now it seems like you prioritize Fiona's interests," Anniston sneered. "Son, do you even know what you want now? Is it Fiona or Lilian?"
A dark shadow flickered in Darwin's eyes.
Seeing this, Anniston wanted to continue provoking him, but Darwin spoke first.
"Does it matter?"
Anniston was left dumbfounded.
"I only want her to stay by my side forever, nothing else matters," Darwin declared before promptly departing.
Anniston stood there, motionless. Her body swayed for a moment, almost toppling to the ground.
After Darwin left, Ross's assistant headed straight to the Solomon family mansion. It was rumored that Darwin would not surrender Fiona, so the assistant went directly to the Solomons. As I wasn't aware of what had occurred, suffice it to say that the assistant departed Armie Country that very night.
Regarding Eric's whereabouts...
About half a month later, someone found a deranged man, naked and partially blind, in a fetid drain, but that's another tale.
On this particular day, Darwin was busy until late at night before returning to the estate.
"Master, Miss Woods and Miss Ashton have already retired for the night," the old servant informed Darwin, taking his coat.
The winter night was cold. He felt a chill enveloping him.
"How was Miss Woods's appetite today?" Darwin inquired.
"With Miss Ashton around, Miss Woods appeared quite content and ate heartily at both lunch and dinner," the old servant replied.
"Hmm."
Darwin acknowledged and made his way to Fiona's resting room. Fiona and Ashton were sleeping together. He gently picked up Fiona and moved her to another bedroom. After the previous night's events, Fiona couldn't sleep deeply either. When Darwin entered the room, she was already awake.
However, she was concerned about rousing Ashton and causing further embarrassment.
It wasn't until they were outside the room that she opened her eyes and uttered, "You... you can put me down, I can walk by myself."
Her voice sounded improved but still somewhat hoarse.
"No," Darwin refused, insisting on carrying Fiona to another bedroom.
He gently set her down and sat beside her. Her face was less swollen, but still bruised.
"So, what happened with the Ross family..."
"Fiona," Darwin interrupted her.
Fiona looked at him. "What's the matter?"
"When your face is better, let's select a date and get married," Darwin stated slowly.
Fiona froze.
"What did you say?"
Darwin cradled her face and leaned in. "I said let's get married."
"You must be joking. You and Hathaway..."
"It won't be long before she voluntarily dissolves our engagement," Darwin's tone turned chilly.
Fiona still felt bewildered.
Did Darwin just... propose to her?
"Why do you have that expression?" Darwin gently pinched her chin. "Don't you want to marry me?"
"But why?" Fiona questioned, puzzled.
Darwin had explicitly warned her previously to act as a good stand-in and not develop any romantic feelings.
Darwin replied, "Why does a man want to marry a woman?" his brows furrowing.
"But I'm not a tycoon. I don't have the money you gave me."
"The money isn't sufficient for you to purchase a diamond cufflink!"
"Yeah, what's with this? How did I let you ensnare me?" Darwin lowered his gaze and leaned in close to Fiona, planting a kiss on her lips. "In a couple of days, you'll accompany Janna to Serene City. By the time you return, things should be nearly settled on my end."
Fiona's heart trembled intensely. Reason told her it wasn't right.
But emotionally...
Fiona suddenly remembered the two balls of light she saw when she was on the verge of death yesterday. For a child, having loving parents and a complete family is, of course, the best!
"Let's wait until you release yourself from the engagement first."
If he genuinely called off the engagement, then she could trust his sincerity.
By then...
She would reveal her pregnancy to him. Considering Darwin's recent fixation on the child, Fiona thought to herself, he should be overjoyed, right?
"Still so haughty?" Darwin pinched her chin and kissed her once more.
"No matter what you do, don't take extreme risks, you know?" Fiona remained concerned about the confrontation between Darwin and the Ross family.
"Don't worry."
The next morning, the sky was just beginning to brighten. Darwin left the house once again. For the next three or four days, he would depart early and return late. Meanwhile, Fiona was pampered with delectable food and beverages at the estate. This routine persisted until Janna finished burying Joshua and returned to Bay City. That evening, Janna arranged for a car to pick up Fiona, and they chartered a plane to Serene City.
