Chapter 325 What Was It Really About?
He had waited so long for Fiona to come out, irritation simmering within him, but as he opened the door, that frustration faltered and dissipated in a heartbeat.
He noticed Fiona had dozed off beside Charles.
The room was dimly lit by a single bedside lamp casting a soft glow.
Darwin approached, halting next to Fiona.
Earlier that day, Wyatt had confronted him. He had given Wyatt a substantial sum of money, along with a stock transfer agreement.
As soon as Wyatt learned that he knew about Fiona's child, who wasn't aborted, Wyatt fell silent.
"Did you orchestrate today's Rhoads family drama?" Wyatt inquired.
Upon confirmation, Wyatt let out a disbelieving chuckle, "Darwin, we grew up together, but I feel like I've never truly understood you. Why isn't it good that the child is alive? Let me tell you frankly, since Fiona's return, I stumbled upon her once and met your daughter. She’s such a lovely and sweet girl. One glance is all it takes to see she is dearly loved and well-raised by her parents."
"You were on the verge of losing all this, and now you have the chance to get it back, so why are you doing all this?"
“Why?” Darwin gazed at Fiona.
His lingering anger held him back. Despite recognizing his past mistakes, he couldn't shake the intense resentment. He wanted Fiona to yield, and to return to him amid all this pressure.
However…
Darwin's brow was creased, the corners of his eyes tinged with red.
He reached out, longing to brush against Fiona's warmth.
It was then, in that fleeting moment, a strand of her hair softly cascaded past her shoulders, and within the locks of her raven hair, Darwin spotted streaks of silver.
His hand froze in mid-air.
His pupils quivered violently, and he took a step back. Ever since the accident, he and Fiona had been inseparable, their days and nights a blur of affectionate banter. He was certain that, until now, she had not had a single strand of grey.
It must have been these recent stressful days since Charles fell ill that added silver threads to her dark hair.
A sharp pain clutched at Darwin’s heart.
Voices taunted him relentlessly.
"Darwin, is this what you wanted?"
"To drive her to despair!"
"To watch her weep!"
"To see her weary to white hair!"
"Is this the result you desired?"
Clutching his chest, Darwin fled the scene in disarray, as if escaping for his life.
…
Perhaps exhaustion had claimed her entirely. Fiona had collapsed into a deep, opaque slumber.
When she awoke, she was in Charles's hospital bed, but Charles and Chicago were nowhere in sight.
Glancing at her phone, she noticed it was half-past eleven.
The results of Charles's tests were due that morning. In haste, she scrambled out of bed and hurried out without even slipping on her shoes.
"Stuart, did Charles's test results come in?" she asked as she made her way out.
Her words hung in the air as she paused, taken aback by the room filled with familiar faces.
Darwin, Charles and Chicago, Janna, and Stuart, along with the Thalassa couple, all gathered around.
Massaging her forehead with a sigh of resignation, she muttered, "Don't any of you have work to attend to? Doesn't this room seem a bit too crowded now?"
“Mommy~”
Chicago darted from Darwin’s side and scampered toward her.
Fiona bent over to scoop her up in an embrace, planting a kiss on her forehead, then turned her gaze to Thalassa, who was still whimpering, “How about you join me in getting the report?”
“Stuart already got them. I took a look!” Thalassa responded, turning her head away, neck stiff with indignation. “I don’t get why I’m the last to know. Charles calls me ‘Mom’ too!”
At the chessboard, Charles lifted a piece and asserted his move with a definitive click, “Checkmate.”
Both Fiona and Thalassa were speechless
“Mommy, the doctor who came earlier said if brother’s condition is stable, he doesn't need to stay in the hospital any longer! Mommy, Chicago wants to take brother back to our island home,” Chicago said in her soft, sweet voice.
Fiona glanced instinctively at Darwin.
"Let's discuss this later, okay?" Fiona asked gently, "Mommy is really hungry right now."
Sure thing!" Chicago volunteered cheerily. "Darwin brought some tasty treats today.
While speaking, Chicago glanced at Wendy.
Wendy immediately flashed a thumbs-up and left to get things ready.
"I'll go freshen up and change," Fiona pecked Chicago on the cheek and then rounded on Charles, planting a kiss on his forehead.
Charles remained cool, seemingly accustomed to the affection.
Thalassa dropped her phone. "I'll join you!" she hurried to follow Fiona.
Kenny's gaze lingered on Thalassa as she moved.
"Kenny, focus. Don't keep losing to me," Charles reminded him mercilessly.
Kenny chuckled, "Alright, alright..."
During this commotion, no one noticed little Chicago's eyes land on the godmother's phone, discarded to the side.
She inch by inch moved toward it.
When she snatched the phone, she sneakily scanned her surroundings and then locked eyes with Darwin, his gaze full of laughter.
She quickly gestured for silence with her finger to her lips.
Darwin simply nodded with a smile. Chicago beamed back a sweet smile.
Then she settled on her little stool, expertly unlocking the godmother's phone with a code.
Thalassa had just been scrolling through short videos to lighten her mood.
Upon unlocking the phone, Chicago found the video still playing. She adored the app and began to scroll slowly downward.
Her eyes widened. Oh wow, the godmother's phone was full of videos of Darwin and Mom!
Chicago couldn't read.
The volume was too low, and she didn't dare turn it up, fearing she might get caught.
But those pink bubbles looked so romantic, and some videos even had pictures of Mom with long hair.
Mom with long hair, together with Darwin?
It was like Chicago had unearthed a new world.
Had Mom and Darwin known each other for a long time?
The TikTok algorithm favored Secretary Woods and Mr. Solomon, and the young socialite heavily featured in the videos caught Chicago's attention.
She was engrossed by the content.
However, after another swipe, the joy on Chicago's face slowly faded.
The videos still had no sound, but she could clearly see Darwin grabbing Mom's arm fiercely, and mom looked anything but happy.
Darwin... He was being mean to Mom! He bullied Mom!
"Chicago! Caught playing with the godmother's phone again?!" Thalassa came out to see Chicago frozen, clutching the phone.
He rushed over and snatched the phone back.
Normally, at this point, Chicago would turn into a little monkey, playfully tussling with him for a while.
Sitting there in the same pose he had just a moment ago, Chicago showed no sign of bothering her.
"What's up, Chicago?" With Charles being sick lately, Thalassa was extra sensitive to others' moods. She crouched down beside the boy, taking his thin arm gently in his hands, and asked with concern.
