Chapter 1388
Carey glanced at Rose and said warmly, "Thanks a lot."
Rose smiled back, "It's nothing, really."
But behind her lowered eyelids, there was a disdain that Carey couldn't see. Rose really couldn't stand elderly folks like Carey. Every time she looked at them, she couldn't help but think of Brooke.
Rose's feelings towards Brooke were a mess. For a long time, she was grateful that Brooke had taken her and her mom in. But later, she realized that if Brooke hadn't messed with Aiden and Marisole's relationship, things might not have gone south. Her life, her mom's life, wouldn't have ended up the way they did. Gradually, the gratitude faded, and Brooke became someone Rose deeply resented and loathed.
To keep Kenny from running around too much, Carey didn't let Thalassa tell him that today was her discharge day. So, the driver came to pick up Carey downstairs. Thalassa and Fiona were worried about Carey living alone again, so they temporarily took her to Emerald Pool.
When Scarlet heard that Carey was sick, she insisted that Kenny and Thalassa bring her to North Alabama for New Year's this year.
Back at Emerald Pool, Thalassa settled Carey in and then went to the cabin to find Fiona.
"You're always here whenever you have free time," Thalassa said, sitting cross-legged across from Fiona. "Is Darwin really coming back at the end of the month?"
"Next Monday," Fiona replied.
Thalassa was shocked. "Really?"
"I'll tell you more about it after next Monday," Fiona said, tapping Thalassa's nose.
Thalassa shook her head slightly. "Be honest, I feel like you've been acting strange lately."
"Strange how?" Fiona asked.
Thalassa pursed her lips. "Like with Ms. Everhart."
Fiona smiled and nodded. "Go on."
Thalassa remarked, "It was so hard for Laura to get a job with you, right? Nine candidates from the top ten QS-ranked schools, all with impressive resumes and internship experiences. However, I saw Ms. Everhart's resume. She barely graduated, her college grades were just passing, and her internship experience was terrible. Her only work experience is as an assistant to Hubert..."
She pursed her lips again. "I don't think you'd give someone like that a chance just because of Aiden. Does Ms. Everhart have some hidden identity? Like maybe she's your dad's illegitimate daughter?"
Fiona immediately laughed.
"This time, you're wrong. I did make an exception for Rose because of Aiden and Marisole," Fiona said, lowering her gaze. "I hope she doesn't end up like her mother. I hope she can embrace the light and find her freedom."
Thalassa had heard a bit about Rose's mother. After Marisole died, she rebelled, had a child at a young age, and by the time she was in her twenties, when others were still in college, she had drunk herself to death.
"Fiona, you're so kind!" Thalassa hugged Fiona. "I believe with you around, she won't follow in her mother's footsteps!"
Fiona gently patted Thalassa's back. "I hope so."
Having found the answer to her confusion from Fiona, Thalassa quickly shifted the topic away from Rose. "Since Darwin is coming back, why don't we all go to North Alabama for New Year's this year? The atmosphere is better there, and Charles and Chicago can play with Brady and his brother!"
