Chapter 1474
Janna's gaze instinctively shifted to Charles.
What used to worry Janna, Charles's height, had completely ceased to be an issue by the time he was around ten years old.
Now, he was even taller than Darwin.
At this moment, Charles stood off to the side in a tailored, sharp suit, his back straight and his eyes downcast. Fiona could tell at a glance that he wasn't paying attention to the conversation, lost in his thoughts.
However, Charles didn't seem particularly happy.
"Charles," Fiona called out.
He looked up, glancing sideways at her. "Mom, what's up?"
"The guests will be arriving soon. Come with me to the wine cellar to pick out a few good bottles."
"Sure," Charles nodded.
"Fiona, I want to come too!" Darwin immediately tried to follow.
Fiona shot him a warning look. "Charles and I can handle it. Too many people in the wine cellar will mess with the temperature!"
Darwin was speechless.
He was used to it after all these years.
Fiona had always been casual when it came to finding excuses to brush him off.
Fiona and Charles entered the wine cellar together.
While he seriously selected the wines, Fiona leaned against a wooden pillar with her arms crossed. "You seem down."
Charles glanced at Fiona. "Is it that obvious? Uncle Burl also said I seemed unhappy."
Fiona nodded with a smirk. "Very obvious."
Charles put down the bottle he was holding and picked up another. "I'm not unhappy, just a bit tired. On this trip abroad, I heard a lot of talk about Wholesome Corporation's son-in-law. He's a tough character and very much against the Solomon Group."
"Over the years, every rising star has targeted the Solomon Group and your father," Fiona said calmly. "When your father steps down, you'll be the one they target, unless the Solomon Group falls."
Charles paused slightly. "Mom, what if I don't want to take over the Solomon Group?"
"That's your choice," Fiona said without hesitation. "Charles, the Solomon Group is your and Chicago's wings, not your shackles. Your father and I decided long ago that we wouldn't force you to take over the company."
Charles acknowledged with a nod. "This one is good. It's your favorite."
Fiona pressed her lips together.
There was an issue between Charles and Charlotte.
It seemed to have started about five or six years ago. Charlotte no longer came back to Emerald Pool often. Strictly speaking, it wasn't that she didn't come back, but every time she did, Charles wasn't around.
Fiona suddenly sighed.
"What's wrong?" Charles looked over.
"I'm a bit worried about Charlotte."
Charles lowered his eyes. "She's very accomplished now. Why worry?"
"When she came back earlier, Grandma Rhoads noticed she had injuries again. She said they were superficial, but what kind of superficial injury requires such thick bandages on her wrist?" Fiona frowned slightly.
As she spoke, she carefully observed Charles's expression.
His handsome face remained unchanged. He placed the selected wines in the crate and picked up another bottle before responding calmly, "That's the life she chose. Even if it means dying in some remote mountain, she would accept it willingly. There's no need to worry about her."
With that, Charles nonchalantly nodded towards the crate. "These should be enough, right?"
