Chapter 438 She Died Last Night

"And what would I say?" Ken was met with Alice's glare, filled with resentment and loathing.

"Worthless, that's what you are. I planned everything for you and spent a fortune, and you can't even outdo this worthless outsider! You're nothing but a loser; soon, you'll be a washed-up one. I want a divorce! I can't stand another moment of disgust and hatred towards you!"

The moment Alice finished speaking, the conference room door burst open. Jannie, clad in sunglasses and a mask, stormed in. Mike instinctively tensed up, but Jannie ignored Fiona completely, making a beeline for Alice. She grabbed Alice's custom-made designer shirt.

"What plans have you made? Did you have anything to do with Chris's death? Tell me the truth!"

Alice gaped at the hysterical woman before her. "Jannie?"

Jannie tore off her mask and sunglasses, her eyes red with fury. "Did you kill him?!"

"How are you still alive?" Alice spat, then turned to a bewildered Ken. "Didn't you tell me you identified the body? She was dead, right?"

Ken sneered, "I lied, you venomous wretch. Did you think you could cut off my family line for good? Dream on!"

"As if you had any mercy on Jannie and her child," Fiona snickered derisively. "She was saved by Mike and his brothers, who fought tooth and nail to save them."

"You gave me a damn concussion! You’ll burn in hell!" Mike exclaimed, then kicked Ken fiercely in the ribs. Ken howled in agony and fell across the conference table.

Then it hit Alice. "Idiot! If you knew she was alive, why didn't you tell me?!"

She shoved past the frail Jannie, lunging at Ken, striking him wildly. "I knew it! With such heavy security and signal jammers, how could Janna's video have gotten out? It was with Jannie all along!"

Fiona twirled a pen in her hand, her memory drifting back to the wee hours of the day before. After consoling Jannie, she was about to rest when an urgent call from her came through. Jannie had found a ring in her child's backpack.

Without hesitation, Fiona and Burl rushed over. On seeing the ring, Burl recognized it at once.
"Charles made the band; it's a miniature camera," Burl said, then pointed to a spot on his ring that looked like a tiny diamond. "This is the camera."

Janna was all for Charles's adventurous spirit in exploring various fields.

There was a time when Janna rarely wore that ring, except once when she, Charles, and some friends from Chicago were watching an animated sci-fi movie. In it, the protagonist's grandmother had sunglasses and a ring that doubled as recording devices.

Charles saw this.

He said, "I can do that too."

Janna was overjoyed, whisking Charles off to her jewelry collection and telling him to pick anything to experiment with.

"If you pull it off, I will have another reward for you!" she exclaimed.

Charles wasn't interested in rewards, but he relished a good challenge.

He browsed through the jewelry collection and selected a ring, a necklace, and gems.

After over a month of research, Charles had transformed the pricey ring into a recording device with storage capabilities undetectable to the untrained eye, all without compromising its elegance.

The necklace was successfully modified, too.

Nonetheless, Janna had a soft spot for that ring.

She began wearing it everywhere, bursting with pride on the inside.

Little did she know that in a crucial moment, the ring, meant to be a showpiece, would become the key to victory.

Alice was still sobbing and yelling at Ken.

"I spent a fortune and even killed your brother because of your stupidity! Ken, why should someone as useless as you live? Why don't you die?!" she screamed.

Ken couldn't take it anymore.

He called her a bitch and pushed her away.

Alice fell hard to the ground.

"Now I see your true colors!" Ken snarled, then turned to Fiona, "She killed Chris! She's hurt so many people! Mom was injected by her, too, but she's still alive, and I'm taking you to her now!"

Fiona had been waiting for this moment.

Knowing Ken and his wife, they wouldn't hand over their grandmother easily after a defeat, likely conspiring together.

They would want to continue using Grandma as leverage.

So, despite her desperate concern, Fiona had been patient, just waiting for the couple to finally show their true colors. Ken had always depended on his ex-wife and mother and never stood alone.

After unfolding the truth about Alice, Fiona was sure that Ken would give up instantly.

Fiona was about to get up when she heard Alice burst into a sudden, loud laugh.

"Find her? Where will you look? Heaven or hell?"

Fiona stiffened, and Ken also turned back, stunned. "What do you mean?"
"She's been dead since last night!" Alice collapsed to the floor, laughing like a mad woman. "Chelsea, how could you not foresee that I, certain of my victory and loathing of that old hag, would take her life ahead of time?"

"You're lying!" Fiona exclaimed in anger.

"Ken, take me there now!"

"We'll go right away!" Ken's legs felt weak.

The wife he had always leaned on had now stabbed him in the back. And the thought of his mother possibly being dead filled Ken with an inexplicable fear. What would he do if his mom was gone? Chicago... That's right... He still had Chicago! He wouldn't be left alone! He couldn't be!

"Ha ha ha ha ha! That witch, Janna… That old hag is dead! I've burned her to ashes! You’ll never see her again!"

"Shut up!" Jannie lunged forward, pinning Alice down, and delivered four stinging slaps across her face. It was the most fierce she had ever been in her life.

"I can't believe I lost to a fool like you!" Alice glared at Jannie venomously. "What good is your grit now? If you had shown this courage while your husband was still alive to keep an eye on him and prevent his dealings with Ken, he wouldn't have met such a tragic end!"

Jannie’s heart was filled with pain. She fought with Alice desperately, entangled in a fierce scuffle.

At this moment, Fiona could no longer pay attention to the fight. She was frightened. It felt as if she was instantly transported back to the moment when she lost her mother, grandfather, and grandmother. Panic-stricken and helpless, she clutched at Ken, and they both stumbled toward the conference room doors.

Janna...
Could you wait for me?
