Chapter 593 Desperate Hostage Situation

"Lilian, have some dignity for yourself," Anthony said and left without even looking back.

Lilian stood there, motionless, devoid of any semblance of dignity, grappling with the aftermath of Fiona's ruthless actions and wondering where she could possibly reclaim her sense of self-worth. Lilian couldn't believe it even now that Fiona had saved Darwin, even though there was overwhelming evidence everywhere.

Lilian held her stomach. The door of the hospital room was open. The people in the surrounding rooms knew who lived there. When they passed by, they would take a glance inside.

Lilian felt the strange looks as if she were seen as a lunatic. Suddenly, she chuckled softly to herself. She walked into the bathroom and looked at her tired reflection in the mirror. "You won't see me? Well then, I'll go see you," she muttered.

Once Anthony left the hospital, he wasted no time calling Darwin. "Hmm, she's still causing a fuss about seeing you... Huh? What do you mean? You're just letting her go so easily, selling her off to Southeast Asia?" The trouble that Sophia caused before was nothing compared to what Lilian had done. Lilian was still locked up in the mental hospital.

"Letting her go?" Darwin chuckled on the other end of the phone, "Once she gives birth to that child, she'll fall into the real hell."

As Anthony listened, an inexplicable chill ran down his spine. "Alright, I know your temper. Since you've made your decision, this is the harshest punishment for Lilian, isn't it?"

"Yes, and make sure to do a good job. Don't let her have a chance to come back."

"You can count on me to handle it."

Anthony hung up the phone and immediately set his people in motion to carry out Darwin's instructions.

But soon enough, Lilian escaped from the hospital. She didn't know where Charles went to school, but because of what happened when Darwin and Fiona went to pick up Chicago, their location was exposed.

Upon departing from the hospital, Lilian made a beeline for the school where Chicago was in the midst of mid-term exams. With the school day concluding after the exams, a sizable gathering awaited Chicago's pickup. Both parents, along with the godfather and godmother, were present in the lineup.

Once Chicago completed her exam, she joyfully joined her friends near the school gate, where a crowd of parents had gathered. Spotting her towering Uncle Stuart among them, Chicago's face lit up with happiness. She quickly said goodbye to her friends and dashed toward Stuart with a beaming smile.

Just as she ran out of the school gate, someone suddenly rushed out from the side. Before anyone could react, that person grabbed Chicago.

"Ah!" Chicago screamed in horror.

"Don't come any closer!" Lilian held a knife to Chicago's throat. Her hand shook uncontrollably, and the tip of the knife pierced Chicago's delicate skin, immediately drawing blood.

"Chicago!" Stuart exclaimed. Then, Mike beside him recognized Lilian.

"Everyone, stay back! Stay back!" Lilian tightly held onto Chicago, waving the knife in her hand as she pressed against the wall, shouting at the surrounding crowd of people.

The parents who came to pick up their children were now terrified. They didn't have time to save anyone as they hugged their own children and hastily hid from Lilian.

"Lilian, calm down. The conflicts between adults have nothing to do with the children. Please release Chicago!" Xavier hurried over, trying to persuade Lilian.

But Lilian's emotions had spiraled beyond restraint.

All she yearned for was to behold Darwin.

"Call Darwin! Call him!" Lilian's voice cracked with hoarse intensity.

Save for a fleeting whimper, Chicago remained silent, her visage reflecting nothing but pitiable dread.

Outside, Darwin and his companions sensed the turmoil unfolding within.

They swiftly abandoned their vehicle and rushed to the scene.

Observing Lilian holding Chicago hostage, their countenances immediately shifted.

"Lilian!"

Darwin walked quickly toward her.

Lilian finally saw Darwin and tears immediately welled up in her eyes. "Why didn't you see me? You forced me! You forced me!"

"What do you want?" Darwin's gaze fell on Chicago's blood-stained neck. He should have killed her.

He should have let her perish without delay!

"Do you care for her?" Lilian squeezed Chicago's waist forcefully.

Chicago winced in agony, yet she made no sound, nor did she glance toward Darwin. She reminded herself, 'No tears allowed.

'No display of fear.

'Mommy and Daddy would fret.'

"Do not lay a hand on her!" Darwin growled.

"Our child resides within me, yet you refuse to acknowledge her existence?" Lilian shouted indignantly.

The knife wavered perilously.

Darwin's heart lodged in his throat.

He dreaded the prospect of the knife inadvertently grazing Chicago.

Fiona's heart raced in tandem.

Lilian's accusatory gaze swiftly shifted toward her. "It's you! You barred him from coming, didn't you?"

"Yes," Fiona admitted without hesitation.

"What kind of person is he? Don't you know? He's willing to take responsibility. It's my fault for being petty. If you release Chicago, I promise I won't stop him from seeing you again, okay?"

Darwin furrowed his brow.

Lilian appeared skeptical.

She looked back at Darwin. "Is what she said true? You wanted to see me? You’re not mad at me, right?"

"Yeah." Darwin nodded. "If you let Chicago go, we can find a place to talk."

"You're lying to me!"

Lilian cocked her head slightly, the tip of the knife once more aimed at Chicago's neck.

"Don't!"

"Lilian!"

Fiona and Darwin's exclamations echoed in unison.

"I can see hatred in your eyes. You won't forgive me... Since you don't want to forgive me anymore... I should bring someone down with me, right?" Lilian laughed maniacally. "Darwin, Fiona, I can't be the only one in pain."

After saying that, Lilian raised her hand and forcefully thrust the tip of the knife toward Chicago's neck. There was no turning back now. If she was going to hell, she might as well take Chicago with her. There was no way she was going to let herself suffer alone.

Even if she pretended to be Chicago's savior, even if Fiona was the real savior, it didn't matter. Darwin was the one who made the mistake and started this whole mess. She initiated the relationship with Darwin before Fiona entered the picture merely as a surrogate. Fiona shouldn't be entitled to everything she desires. The status, the love…

In this crucial moment, a small pebble flew through the air and hit Lilian's hand, causing her to cry out in pain. Her hand went numb and the dagger fell from her grasp.

Stuart, who had been slowly moving closer to Lilian, pounced on her with lightning speed. He kicked Lilian aside, snatched Chicago from her hands, and held her tightly in his arms as he quickly moved away from Lilian.

Fiona, Darwin, Thalassa, and Kenny surged forward, a chorus of concern echoing in their wake as they bore witness to the aftermath of Lilian's descent into madness. Fiona's tender touch brushed against Chicago's neck, relief flooding her features as she discerned the superficial nature of the wound.

"Babe, you're okay, you're okay now," Fiona murmured, her voice a soothing balm against the turmoil, as she enveloped Chicago in a cocoon of reassurance and love.
