Chapter 1483
The phone call ended.
Charles was already standing right in front of her.
Charlotte couldn't remember the last time they'd been this close.
She looked down for a second, then glanced back up at him with a soft smile. "Hey, it's been a while."
"Been a while? We just saw each other in the banquet hall," Charles replied, his tone icy.
"Well, we didn't exactly say hello," Charlotte said, not liking his coldness.
She decided to stand up, not bothering with her high heels.
"I won't keep you. I'm heading back now," she said, ready to leave.
"Leaving tomorrow?" Charles's voice cut through the air again.
Charlotte smiled and nodded. "Yeah, got a lot going on lately."
"Does that include getting married?" he asked.
"Yep," she nodded calmly, not giving any more details.
Charles looked at her.
Her beautiful eyes seemed to swirl with emotion.
They stared at each other in silence for a moment. Charlotte then looked away, lightly moving her fingers in a gesture of farewell.
Then she left without looking back.
Charlotte didn't return to the banquet hall.
She went to the parking lot, took out a pair of flats from the trunk, and changed into them.
She looked up at the quiet night sky.
The distant sounds of the city were faintly audible.
Charlotte couldn't quite remember when her feelings for Charles had surpassed friendship.
She only remembered his 16th birthday.
She suddenly kissed him.
The fearless girl ran away that night.
Thank goodness she was close to graduation.
She followed her mentor into the depths of the wilderness.
Charlotte buried herself in insect research for three years, missing both Chicago and Charles's coming-of-age ceremony.
But even if she didn't go, others would come looking for her.
At that time, Charlotte was alone in a jungle, observing the life of a rare insect family.
Maybe the rainy nights in the jungle were too unsettling, and the two of them spent seven days there, wrapped in endless passion.
Then they fell in love.
Charlotte finished her periodic research and returned home for a break, accompanying Charles at work.
At that time, Charles's job wasn't in Bay City.
It was in a small town near Bay City, less than a two-hour drive away.
They lived together in that small town for about half a year.
Until Janna's birthday that year.
Charlotte pulled herself away from a meeting.
She opened the car door and sat in the driver's seat.
Charlotte touched the spot on her right ring finger, then looked up at the dense night sky.
She entered the address of that small town into the GPS.
She wanted to go back one last time.
Her arm injury wasn't great, so she drove slowly.
By the time she arrived, the small town had already fallen asleep, with only the streetlights illuminating the road at intervals.
Charlotte parked the car.
She sat for a while before getting out.
Chicago called. "Charlotte, where did you go?"
Melissa's voice could be heard in the background. "My heart is breaking for you, and you still won't come comfort me!"
Charlotte chuckled. "I have something to do. I'll be back tomorrow morning."
"What?" Chicago sounded anxious.
She knew Charlotte's flight was scheduled for the evening.
There wasn't much time left for her brother!
And Charlotte was planning to stay out all night!
"Just keep Melissa company."
"Alright," Chicago grumbled.
The call ended.
Charlotte adjusted her coat.
She walked towards a small villa.
The villa looked the same as the first time she had seen it.
Except the flowers in the yard, now untended, had grown wild and lost their beauty.
Charlotte pushed open the gate and went inside, taking a key from her pocket.
She opened the door.
It didn't smell as bad as she had imagined.
