Chapter 445 When a Scholar Gets Duped?
Kenny affectionately ruffled her hair. "How can that happen?"
Thalassa pursed her lips. "Do they know I'm so much older than you?" Her relationship with Chris had accustomed her to various manipulative tactics, and it was difficult to shake off those old patterns of thinking. She often found herself downplaying her worth unconsciously.
"You don't need to worry about what others think. To me, you're the best," Kenny whispered, bending down to kiss her forehead reassuringly. This sent waves of sweetness through Thalassa's heart. Her unfounded anxieties were soothed with just a few words from Kenny.
"Okay!" Thalassa nodded, her spirits lifted.
The gathering was scheduled for the evening. Thalassa got up early that morning and stopped by the construction site. Kenny seemed to have a light schedule these days, taking their dog and Chicago to the park, handling Charles's routine medical check-ups, overseeing his homeschooling, and visiting Jessie at the pet store. The intertwining daily chores were all managed by Kenny.
At midday, with Chicago and Charles in tow, Kenny picked up Thalassa, and they all enjoyed a lavish meal together. The usually sullen Chicago beamed with joy after an afternoon of fun outdoors.
Once home, Chicago wrapped herself up in a video call with her grandparents. Thalassa, watching the clock, hurried to shower, did her makeup, and styled her hair in record time. She and Kenny had picked out her outfit days in advance, and when she descended the stairs, all dressed, Chicago exclaimed in her sweet voice, "Oh wow! Godmother and Goddaddy are in matching outfits!"
Startled, Thalassa turned to look at Kenny, who was all dressed up and waiting for her. He was in a sleek black suit with a crisp white shirt. She wore a simple, elegant white dress paired with black high heels. When Kenny saw her, his eyes sparkled with a joyful smile.
He stepped forward and, wrapping his arm around her waist, whispered, "Mrs. Walker, you look stunning."
Thalassa had always heard that the look of adoration in someone's eyes was hard to hide. And right then, it was unmistakable in Kenny's gaze.
She looked into Kenny's eyes, beaming with joy and sparkling with fondness, and effortlessly felt his affection and admiration for her. It was something she never sensed from Chris. He always seemed to be putting her down and devaluing her.
Thalassa laughed, "Mr. Walker is quite the hunk!"
Chicago, with her phone in hand, sprawled out on the couch. She couldn't stop laughing. "Mom, look at this!"
"Fiona, don't you think Chicago is being a bit too nosy?" Holding Kenny's hand, Thalassa stood on her tiptoes, peeking over his shoulder and shouting towards the phone.
Going with the flow, Kenny wrapped one arm around her slim waist, lifted her over the step, and gently placed her down.
Chicago now laughed even harder.
"It's just that you two are so lovey-dovey," Fiona replied from the other end of the video call.
"Hmph!" Thalassa knew they were being affectionate, but who wasn't in the honeymoon phase?
She released Kenny's hand and ran to Chicago. "Your godfather and I are heading out. We might be back late. Can you take care of yourself and your brother?"
Chicago nodded vigorously. "Sure can!"
"What a good kid!"
Thalassa planted a loud kiss on Chicago's forehead.
"Lipstick..." Charles attempted to warn her, to no avail.
He could only sigh, pull out a couple of wet wipes, and approach his sister to clean her up.
Thalassa took the opportunity, planting a quick kiss on Charles' cheek so fast that he barely could react.
Charles was stunned.
After the kiss, Thalassa grabbed Kenny's hand, and they dashed outside, calling out, "We're off."
The door shut.
Chicago rolled around the couch with laughter.
Charles let out a sigh.
He pulled out two more wet wipes, picked up the dropped phone from the couch, wiped his face, and asked Fiona, "When will you come back? Chicago missed you to tears last night."
"No, I didn't!" Chicago shot up, immediately denying it.
Charles, resigning to the denial, replied, "Alright, she didn't cry."
"If she doesn't get better in the next couple of days, I'll send Darwin back first." Fiona pointed to Darwin sitting nearby.
Darwin looked puzzled.
Was there a chance he didn't want to be apart from his wife? How could he feel comfortable with her staying alone?
Before Darwin could speak, Charles said, "I wouldn't think so. You've had a rough patch. It’s better not to live apart."
That comment, somehow, didn't sound right.
Fiona, drinking water, nearly spit it out.
"Charles, you..."
"No need to feel awkward. It's the truth. Look at how lovey-dovey our godmother and Kenny were just now."
At the Davidson household, animated chitchat filled the living room.
Kenny and Thalassa had already hit the road, heading to the party's hotel.
By this time, most of the guests had already arrived.
The venue for the gathering was a swanky rooftop pool offered by an international student whose family owned the hotel chain hosting the event.
"You went all out, didn't you?" Aurora, donning a champagne-colored strapless gown, was the picture of radiant beauty, a stunning vista in her own right.
Jasper had eyes only for Aurora; they were practically glued to her as he said, "As long as you like it, senior."
Just then, Aurora spotted Lay across the room and immediately waved him over.
Lay approached with a big smile. "Here comes the brainiac."
"Cut it out, will you?" Aurora pleaded, "The real deal's coming soon. If you keep calling me that when he shows up, I'll need to find a hole to crawl into!"
Lay glanced at the time. "Kenny left half an hour ago; he'll probably be here in another fifteen minutes or so."
Excitement passed through the crowd the moment her words hung in the air.
Everyone turned their attention, spotting a girl rushing their way.
"Lay, you mentioned Kenny got hitched. Have you met his wife?" someone asked.
Lay frowned in response. "He's posted about her. Everyone knows."
"Holy smokes!" The girl thrust her phone into Lay's face. "Check this out. Someone on the campus forum spilled the beans on 'Saint Kenny's' wife. Not only is she six years his senior, but apparently, she's kept by a sugar daddy and has an illegitimate kid with him—a kid she's brazenly raising in the same neighborhood they live!"
"No way," Lay murmured skeptically.
Kenny couldn't be that poor a judge of character, could he?
"Pictures or it didn't happen!" insisted the girl, scrolling down rapidly.
Indeed, there was an image of a woman resembling Kenny's publicly acknowledged partner, holding hands with a young boy.
"And if that's not wild enough, she's supporting a toyboy—look at the video at the bottom!" The girl's frustration grew.
Was Kenny, the untouchable handsome hunk in the eyes of many, trapped by such a woman?
