Chapter 330 Actually, It's Dad

Dagmar's hand trembled almost uncontrollably.

"Are you at the hospital right now?" Dagmar asked.

"No, took care of some errands," Fiona replied.

"Send me your location. I'm coming to you," Dagmar said, making a conscious effort to steady his voice and control the shaking of his hands.

"Okay."

After the call ended, Fiona sent her coordinates to Dagmar, who was earnestly trying to rub the anxiety away from his wrists.

Distress was weighing heavily on him.

"Are you okay?" the boy asked with concern.

Dagmar took a deep breath and returned to them. He placed his business card on the hospital bed, "I've covered your hospital bills, and as for getting treated, that's your choice. Just give me a call if you need anything."

With that, Dagmar hurriedly made his way out.

Linden Waters and Ruby watched him leave.

"Brother..." Ruby asked, her eyes filled with worry, "Are you going to die?"

Linden immediately shook his head, "No, Ruby, I'm not going to die. Didn't our guardian angel just pay for our hospital fees?"

"Right," Ruby nodded timidly, her eyes following the path as Dagmar left.

Uncle John was a stand-up guy, always remembered his debts of gratitude. He'd say, "One day, when I've got the chops, I'll pay it forward."

Dagmar's hands shook violently, and although the tremors subsided with medication, driving was still not an option. He resorted to calling a cab to Fiona's place. Spotting her car, he strode over, opened the passenger door, and got inside.

"Why is there blood on you? Did someone attack you?" Fiona turned her head and noticed a bloodstain on the chest of Dagmar’s jacket.

Even he did not notice the blood stains himself.

"No wonder the cab driver kept staring at me." Dagmar dabbed at his chest. "I helped a kid on the sidewalk, some thug broke his ribs. It was his blood that splattered on me."

"That's a relief..." Fiona exhaled.

Dagmar kept rubbing the stain relentlessly.

Sensing that something was amiss, Fiona reached out and held his hand to stop him. “Dagmar, what are you doing?”

His breathing was erratic.

He glanced at Fiona. "Why did Darwin suddenly let me off the hook?"

Fiona's hand stiffened for a moment.

"What did you promise him?" Dagmar pressed on.

"Dagmar, this was always between Darwin and me. He's been unreasonable, taking it out on you, again and again," Fiona lowered her eyes. "I can't drag you or anyone else into this anymore... Whatever happens between Darwin and me..."

She didn't get to finish. Dagmar raised his voice in a sudden burst of emotion. "What did you agree to?"

Fiona looked him in the eye. "We got married."

Dagmar froze. Shock was written all over his eyes.

"Married?"

"Yeah. It's better for everyone. I don't have to worry about him going after Charles and my peace in Chicago anymore," Fiona said gravely.

Dagmar looked away, his eyes downcast, then let out a short laugh. "Better for everyone... yeah, really better for everyone."

"Dagmar, listen..."

"When he threatened you with me, what were you thinking?" Dagmar fixed his gaze on Fiona.

"Thinking I was still the pushover I used to be, just a bug under Darwin's thumb? You didn't even call to ask what was going on, just assumed I couldn't beat Darwin."

"That's not it..." Fiona tried to interject.

But Dagmar didn't seem to need her explanation.

"No." Dagmar shook his head, chuckling. "You've never gotten over him, have you? This was just a way to give you both an out, stepping on me to gracefully walk down the aisle."

"Dagmar, I'm truly sorry if you feel hurt..."

"It's fine." Dagmar cut her off again.

He had imagined this scenario countless times in his mind. Yet, when it actually happened, he still felt like the biggest fool in the world.

"Best wishes on your wedding."

After saying those words, Dagmar pushed open the car door and stepped out decisively.

Fiona wanted to chase after him, but she stopped herself.

What would she say even if she caught up with him?

It was futile.

It was better to let Dagmar give up completely. Only when he let go could he embark on the journey to his own vast new world.

Fiona sat in the car, tears streaming down her face as she witnessed Dagmar’s tall, slender figure walking away.

“Dagmar, I'm so deeply sorry. You will find someone who cherishes you and only you.”

When Fiona returned to the hospital, Chicago was still sulking.

"You should try talking to her," Janna urged upon seeing her come back, "She hasn't had a sip of water... won't listen to anyone."

"Who does Chicago even take after? Once she digs her heels in, nothing can pull her back," Thalassa said helplessly.

She and Kenny had finished compatibility testing that afternoon.

Now, feeling slightly more composed, they were worried about Charles' health as well as curious about what had happened during the long time Darwin had spent with Fiona. Was he using threats, trying to coax or scare her?

Fiona opened the door to the small balcony.

Both Charles and Chicago were there.

"Charles, could you give me and Chicago, some private time to talk?" Fiona asked.

Charles nodded and went inside.

Fiona took a seat on the little wicker chair and pulled on Chicago's arm, trying to turn her around.

However, Chicago refused to budge.

"Sweetie, don't you want to know why Darwin fought with mom?"

Fiona knew Chicago too well.

At that question, Chicago's face turned slightly more toward her.

"Come to mom's arms," Fiona beckoned her.

After a moment's hesitation, Chicago extended her hand to Fiona, who pulled her into her embrace.

Thalassa watched the scene through the glass window.

Speechless, she began to clap. She had talked all afternoon, exhausting herself without any results. But when the real mother arrived, a simple gesture did the trick.

"Your eyes are all swollen, doesn't it hurt?" Fiona stroked Chicago's cheek with a pained heart.

Chicago didn't respond.

It appeared that she was simply waiting for Fiona to disclose the reason behind the fight.
Fiona let out a soft sigh and then spoke earnestly to Chicago, “Honey, actually, your mom and Darwin, we knew each other a long, long time ago—so long ago, in fact, that it was before you and your brother were even born.”

Back then, did Mom have long hair?' Chicago finally spoke up, engaging in the conversation. Fiona nodded, 'How did you come to know?' Fiona nodded, "How did you come to know?"

"I saw it on Mom's phone in a video—how you and that jerk Darwin..." Chicago's tone was decisive, having long since dropped any affectionate nicknames.

Fiona patted her little head, "Back then, Mommy really, really liked him. We were actually going to get married."

"Married?" Chicago was shocked.

"Yeah," Fiona pinched her chubby cheek. "But things happened, and we split up... After that, Mommy had you and your brother, Chicago... Actually, Darwin is your father.”
