Chapter 1054
It was clearly very easy to avoid that.
"Alright, don't think about it anymore," Fiona said, shaking her head gently. "Chicago is fine now and has learned a lesson. This kind of thing won't happen again."
"Yes! It definitely won't happen again!" Charlotte immediately responded, "From now on, my attention will be on Chicago and Charles, and I won't be distracted by anything irrelevant."
The biggest mistake today was that she heard Fiona's voice.
She glanced over and got distracted.
Fiona felt helpless. She wanted to tell her to focus on herself. But the words stuck in her throat and didn't come out.
Charlotte had long developed her own fixed way of thinking with Christopher.
At least for now, it was hard to change.
"Alright." Fiona nodded gently. "Chicago is very safe now. Why don't you go and rest?"
Charlotte glanced at the door of the hospital room, hesitated for a moment, and then nodded.
Fiona watched Charlotte leave. She let out a long sigh.
Only then did she get up and gently push open the door to the hospital room.
Darwin, sitting by the bed, immediately turned his head.
Charles was holding Chicago's hand, sleeping by the bedside, and Chicago was also sleeping, looking quite aggrieved.
Fiona walked up to Darwin. He instinctively reached out and held her hand.
She looked at Darwin. "Were you scared?"
His eyes reddened. "I'm sorry."
Fiona sighed helplessly. "Why is everyone apologizing to me?"
"I should have noticed earlier that Chicago had run out," Darwin said in a low voice, "Why can't I do anything right?"
"This kind of thing is hard to prevent. Even if I were here, if she ran out during my nap, I wouldn't have been able to notice," Fiona said softly.
In fact, when she first discovered that Chicago and the others had sneaked out without security, her first thought was, what was Darwin doing? How could he not notice?
However, if she were here, she probably wouldn't have noticed either.
Darwin said nothing.
From the moment he knew Chicago had sneaked out, he rushed to the riverside and saw Fiona soaking wet, holding Chicago.
Darwin's soul seemed to be hanging in the air.
"Alright." Fiona patted his head. "I got lost when I was a kid too."
Darwin looked at Fiona, his brows slightly furrowed.
Fiona used her fingertips to smooth out his furrowed brows gently.
"Back then, my mom had just passed away not long ago. One night, I missed her so much that I cried all night. Before dawn, I got up secretly, took my pocket money, and went to the bus stop by myself. I took a bus to the cemetery," Fiona said with a smile, shaking her head. "I don't remember where that cemetery was; it was really far. Transportation wasn't as developed back then, and there were more bad people."
Darwin tightened his grip on Fiona's hand.
Fiona continued, "My grandparents went out early to buy groceries and didn't notice I was gone. When they came back and called me to get up, they found I was missing."
She was tilting her head to look at Darwin. "The caretaker of that cemetery found me in the afternoon and immediately called my grandpa. He told me that the kid next door to his house had been kidnapped a year ago. The kid's parents blamed each other and ended up getting divorced. I was scared to death. I didn't want my grandparents to get divorced."
"And then?" Darwin asked, "Did your grandparents spank you?"
"They did!" Fiona said, "Both of them spanked me together. I thought they couldn't get divorced, so I didn't dare to resist at all. After they found out I was missing, although they were very worried, they didn't argue at all. They were just worried that the other would be too anxious and have health problems."
"Your grandparents must have loved each other very much," Darwin said.
"Very much," Fiona said without hesitation, "When my grandpa was alive, he bought flowers for grandma every day. If something happened at home, even those trivial things, they never blamed each other."
