Chapter 221 The Absurd Prenuptial Agreement

Kenny's remark seemed playful.
But...
Ashton massaged her temples.
There was truth in his words.
Why had she engaged in that verbal spar with Chris and Crystal Robbins?
"Hold on!"
Ashton was struck by a sudden realization.
She turned to Kenny with shock: "What did you just say? Ex?"
Kenny looked nonchalant: "I'm not blind, the way he looked at you didn't suggest siblings in the slightest."
A chill ran through Ashton's veins.
This was the first time their secret had been uncovered.
"Don't you think..."
Before Ashton could finish, Kenny interrupted: "No, I don't think."
"Do you even know what I was going to ask?" Ashton's gaze hardened.
"What else could it be? It's the same lines Chris used before, trying to convince you to secretly date him." Kenny leaned in close, playfully tousling her hair. "Wake up, Ashton. Think about it—do those words really hold up?"
Ashton clammed up.
Her mind was swamped with the words Chris had used to charm her over the years.
In hindsight...
They seemed like manipulations, casting their relationship as something shameful and clandestine.
But if he found it so dirty,
Why then had he stayed with her all these years?
"Why do you want to marry me?" After a long silence, Ashton turned to him with the question.
Without hesitation, Kenny responded: "Because you're good."
"Did we know each other before?" Ashton wondered if she had unwittingly stumbled into some drama where a rich young heir had been pining for her.
Kenny shook his head.
Ashton: "..."
"You're not just into men, trying to marry me as a smokescreen, are you?" Ashton asked with a touch of paranoia.
Kenny: "..."
"Here."
He handed his phone to Ashton.
"What for?" she asked warily.
"You can check all the information," Kenny replied, "Now, as well as after we're married."
Ashton furrowed her brows.
Chris never let her look through his phone.
Hesitantly, as if compelled by some mysterious force, she took it from him.
The first message in the WhatsApp was a conversation between him and a named attorney.
She glanced at him and tapped to open it.
Just then, the attorney sent over a document.
Ashton panicked, fearing she'd stumbled upon Kenny's secrets and might be accused of snooping.
She quickly turned away and handed back the phone: "You've got a message."
"Check this out," Kenny said with a grin.

Ashton flicked a glance his way, her gaze eventually drifting back to the screen.
Then she froze.

"Mr. Sheng, the prenuptial agreement has been drafted as per your request. Is there anything you'd like to change?"

Prenup?
Of course. With his kind of wealth, it was a given.
Otherwise, a divorce could cost him a fortune.

Ashton opened the document, curious about what a wealthy person's prenup might entail.
And just like that.
Her mind went blank.
The agreement was almost entirely about constraining Kenny.
Put simply, if Kenny cheated, treated Ashton poorly, leading to a divorce or such,
All of his assets, before and after the marriage, would go to Ashton.

However, there were no stipulations that Ashton couldn't cheat or mistreat Kenny. If she wanted a divorce, Kenny would agree to it with no conditions.
"You..." Ashton's brow furrowed.

She looked at him earnestly. "Mr. Kenny, this isn't a prenup, it's practically an indenture. Aren't you afraid I might actually sign this and then run off with your fortune?"

"If that happens, I'll just earn it back," Kenny replied, seemingly fearless.

Silence fell over Ashton. "I still can't understand what you see in me."

"Do I have to be after something?" Kenny asked.
Ashton was speechless.
His question struck a chord.
Wasn't everyone around her always looking to gain something?
Even Chris, she had helped him to network with several businesses under the Ji Corporation.

In this world,
Is there really anyone who's kind to another without wanting anything in return?
"You're not a trafficker, are you?" Ashton asked gravely.

Kenny looked at her, this time without a smile.
When faced with kindness, Ashton's first instinct wasn't joy.
It was suspicion.
Because it seemed impossible to her that someone could just be kind.

Kenny felt a tightness in his chest.

"It's not without reason," Kenny replied calmly. "My family's been pushing me to marry people I dislike. If I get married sooner, I can avoid a lot of that hassle."

He paused.
"And you're the same. If you were married, you could sidestep many troubles as well."

Ashton's eyes fell.
She wasn't getting any younger.
Living single was an option, but...
Then she remembered Kenny standing in front of her, fiercely protective.
Okay, she admitted.
She was timid and cowardly.
Longing for someone who would stand by her without hesitation.

Ashton looked up at him, her eyes welling up again: "Mr. Kenny, I’ll treat you well, but I might... I might not be able to fall in love with you."
Chris had shattered her heart.
She wasn't even sure if she still had the capacity to fall in love.

"Is that so?" Kenny lowered his gaze, a sheen of disappointment in his eyes.

Ashton couldn't hide the hurt in hers.

Look at that, who could put up with someone who's incapable of loving their own wife?

"You'll have to be extra good to me, then. Otherwise, it just wouldn't be fair," Kenny said, looking up with utmost seriousness.

Ashton paused for a moment, then burst into laughter.

Had she ever been so resolutely chosen by anyone in her life?

It felt... amazingly good.

"We'll need to revise the prenup," she said, handing the phone back to Kenny.

Kenny was taken aback. "You're agreeing to it?" he asked.

"Why wouldn't I? It seems like the universe just dropped a pie right on my head. Why would I say no to that?"

In the next second, Kenny leaned in and wrapped his arms around Ashton.

Ashton had only ever dated Chris, who never hugged her in public.

She stiffened momentarily.

Kenny's scent was a subtle sandalwood, comforting and heartwarming.

She smiled.

"I'd like to run my fingers through your hair," she told Kenny.

"Sure," Kenny replied, his voice tinged with excitement.

Ashton lifted her hand, her fingers brushing through Kenny's hair with satisfaction. "Just as I thought."

"What you thought?" Kenny released her, puzzled.

"It might sound a bit strange," Ashton said with a smile, "but the first time I saw you, I just knew that your hair would be fun to mess up."

Kenny was momentarily stunned, then burst into laughter, joined by Ashton.

A moment later, Kenny took Ashton's hand, their fingers entwining tightly.

"Mrs. Walker, please relax, I'll never force you to do anything you don't want to. I'll always be by your side," Kenny said earnestly. "We're going to have a home where we both feel secure and happy."
