Chapter 169 Bolt from the Blue
"Chicago, did your parents agree to this?" Darwin asked.
Chicago didn't want to lie, "Mommy is very busy, didn't have time, so Chicago invited Uncle for dinner, come on Uncle! I'm so hungry!"
Chicago seemed genuinely in a rush.
Darwin chuckled and decisively picked her up, "Alright."
"Miss!" Wendy had been through a roller coaster of emotions but still decided she had to stop her young lady's reckless action. If Fiona found out, the sky would fall! She always knew that Fiona was an angel when not angry, but when she was, she was terrifying beyond words!
Chicago gave Wendy a fierce glance.
Darwin also stopped and turned around, looking at Wendy with a calm gaze, "What's up?"
Wendy was so overpowered by his presence that she couldn't utter a single word. She could only shake her head in the end.
"Uncle, let's go!"
Taking advantage of the fact that Uncle seemed to have already forgotten about the mean aunty, she had to leave the art exhibition quickly with Uncle!
"Okay."
Soon, Darwin had Chicago and Wendy in the car, starting up the engine and driving out of the museum's parking garage.
While Wendy was on pins and needles, Fiona's call came through.
Startled, Wendy almost let the phone fly out of her hand, but she answered it.
"Well... the miss is in the car of the gentleman who was buying the paintings... Yes... they're going to have dinner... I... I understand!"
Wendy handed the phone to Chicago with a pale face.
Chicago bit her lip, glanced at Darwin who was driving, and accepted the call with a sense of resigned courage.
"Mommy..."
"What did I just say?" Fiona asked.
Chicago stayed silent.
"Do you like that uncle so much?" Fiona probed again.
"Mhm!" replied Chicago, "Uncle is very nice."
Darwin glanced at them through the rearview mirror.
After a moment of silence on the phone, Fiona spoke again, "Don't talk nonsense in front of Uncle, especially not about family matters, can you do that?"
"Mhm!" Chicago's spirits immediately lifted, "Mommy, does this mean you agree?"
After a few more words of caution, Fiona hung up the phone.
She massaged her forehead and forced out a sentence, "Chicago is really getting out of control with all the pampering."
"She really ran away with Darwin?" Ashton was astonished.
"Yep." Fiona nodded.
Ashton glanced at Charles, who had been playing video games with headphones on since getting into the car.
"There's something I better just tell you." Ashton resolved.
Fiona looked toward him.
Ashton pursed her lips slightly, "Actually, this isn't the first time Chicago and Darwin have met."
Fiona was shocked, "When did they meet before?"
"Do you remember the handsome uncle?" Ashton asked.
Fiona felt as if thunder had struck on a clear day.
"Are you saying that Chicago piggybacked on Darwin's meal that day?"
"Yeah, so I think you should relax. Darwin just seems to have taken a liking to kids. He didn't suspect anything that day, and he won't today." Ashton revealed because she didn't want Fiona to worry needlessly.
"How could you keep something so important from me?" Fiona was somewhat at a loss.
Chicago had just returned to the country and already knew Darwin.
And it seems they get along so well.
"I was afraid you'd overthink it." Ashton mumbled, "I'm telling you now because I don't want you to worry too much."
Fiona covered her face, her emotions incredibly complicated.
Previously, Darwin had told her about Lilian's hysterectomy.
She thought about how Darwin and Lilian, along with Chicago, were now chatting and laughing, even having lunch together.
An inexplicable panic began to set in her heart.
If Darwin found out Chicago was his daughter, for Lilian's sake, he might fight her relentlessly!
If such a day ever came, she'd make sure Darwin had no place to rest in peace.
No one could take her child away from her!
After hanging up the phone on Chicago's end, Darwin saw Wendy's defeated expression.
"Chicago, did Mom really agree to you inviting me for a meal?"
Wendy's expression, combined with Chicago's demeanor while on the call, he was skeptical.
"Of course!" This time it was a genuine declaration.
"Mommy was just worried I'd disturb Uncle and his date... she told me to behave!"
Chicago thought to herself, "That was close, I almost bad-mouthed the auntie!"
"My date?" Darwin laughed, "Your mother is mistaken, I'm not dating the auntie. She's my colleague."
"Aren't you dating? Don't you really like her?" Chicago nearly jumped, fortunately, the seatbelt was restraining her.
"Of course not." Darwin replied without hesitation.
"Wow!" Chicago looked at Wendy, mouthing, "That was close!"
Turns out the villainous aunt and the nice uncle were just colleagues after all!
The villainous aunt was even trying to trap the uncle with a child! Way too dangerous!
Wendy was still in a state of shock. How could she be so confused?
Just then, Darwin's phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID, pulled over to the side of the road, and answered.
"Darwin, where did you go? I didn't see you when I got back." said Lilian's gentle voice over the phone.
Darwin's tone was flat, "Lilian, Chicago and I left to go have dinner. You should take a cab back home."
Lilian stood frozen, as if struck by lightning.
She thought Darwin was going to take that kid out to eat and would undoubtedly bring her along.
But he had left with that annoying kid?
"Darwin, how could you leave me behind?" Lilian asked pitifully, "You know today is my..."
"Lilian, I can't be with you every year on this day." Darwin replied indifferently.
Lilian fell silent on the other end of the phone.
"I really don't want to be alone today. Where are you guys planning to have lunch? I'll come find you."
Through the rearview mirror, Darwin glanced at Chicago.
The kid was listening intently to the conversation. A smile involuntarily rose in Darwin's eyes.
"No, Chicago is not used to strangers, and I'm driving now, so I can't keep talking." Darwin said, then he hung up the phone turning back to Chicago.
Chicago smiled sweetly, squinting her eyes with delight.
She had invited Darwin to a meal, but the restaurant Darwin chose was a child-friendly place.
Right at the entrance, there was a large indoor playground for kids.
Chicago's eyes lit up at the sight of it.
"Shall I join you here to play after lunch?"
"Really? Don't you have to work?" Chicago asked sincerely.
Mommy is very busy. She only has one day a week to spend with Chicago and her brother. Not just Mommy, all the adults seem to be so busy. Chicago had gotten used to adults being busy.
"Today's my day off." Darwin answered.
"Yay!" Chicago was ecstatic.
