Chapter 484 Exposing the Heartless Couple
The teenager was more important than his own life now.
If Steven, in a fit of rage, did something to Daren that would delay the surgery.
He would indeed be killed by Darwin.
“Didn’t I tell you to get lost? Are you sick of living?” Calvin pressed his foot against Steven’s chest.
Steven winced in pain.
Fiona hadn’t driven away yet.
Hearing the commotion, she stepped out of the car.
"Calvin, you can't handle a guy like him?" Fiona walked back.
"Ms. Fiona, I had already sent him away just now," Calvin said in a low voice. "I apologize for my oversight."
"My son is not of age yet, you need my consent to use his bone marrow!" Steven screamed, "Daren's mother is no good, she has corrupted the kid! Give him all that money, and he's bound to get into trouble, you'll ruin a child!"
"Your son?" Fiona chuckled and then turned to Daren. "Kid, is he your dad?"
"Hell no," Daren replied without hesitation.
"You ungrateful brat, denying your own father will bring divine retribution!"
"You're the rapist who should be struck by lightning," Daren responded through gritted teeth.
Fiona glanced at Daren, visibly seething with hatred for Steven, and sensed something amiss.
"You rotten scoundrel, denying your own father for money," Steven continued to rant.
"Sorry to disappoint you, but I didn't take a dime," Daren retorted with a sneer.
"What did you say?" Steven froze.
"I said I didn't take any money," Daren spelled out. "So, don't bother trying to cash in on me, you won't get anything from me!"
"You..."
Daren began to struggle.
"Do you have any idea how much they pay for bone marrow donations? At least fifty million dollars!"
"Madam, please go ahead with your business, no need to mind him," Daren said to Fiona. "I am a man of my word, and I won't go back on it."
Fiona smiled warmly at Daren. "I know."
With that, she turned to Calvin. "Mr. Darwin speaks highly of you, but if you keep screwing up..."
"Ms. Fiona, please give me another chance!"
Fiona nodded.
However, as she walked away, she still left two guys behind to assist Calvin.
Calvin watched Fiona leave, then turned to Steven, fuming with frustration.
"Kid, why don't you wait for me in the car," Calvin said to Daren.
He hadn't expected it.
The kid hadn't taken a dime.
He was more honorable than his dad.
Thus, Calvin was fairly courteous to Daren.
"Sure," Daren paused, "Just be careful with him; he's always been sly."
As he said this, Daren pointed to a scar about four or five centimeters long on his calf.
"He tried to pull a knife on me in a fight when he couldn't win."
Calvin laughed, patting Daren on the shoulder. "Got it, Daren; off you go."
Daren got in the car without looking back, leaving Steven to rage behind him.
Just then, Calvin's phone buzzed. He took a glance.
He raised an eyebrow and looked at Steven with a smile. Steven felt a chill run down his spine.
"What... what are you doing?" Steven asked, unease lacing his words.
Calvin moved his neck around, "Mr. Steven, did you just effectively sign your own death warrant by calling Ms. Fiona, sister-in-law?"
Steven's body stiffened.
"What... what do you want to do?" he stuttered.
"Ms. Fiona always keeps her word. She said she would pull out all your teeth, and she meant every single one," Calvin explained with eerie calmness.
Steven clutched his mouth.
He scrambled up and bolted for the door, sprinting out of the hospital as quickly as he could. Calvin's men looked ready to chase, but he just coldly chuckled and lifted his arm, signaling them to stop. There was no need for pursuit.
Steven, running for his life, escaped the hospital grounds. He didn't dare go to the police station since he'd just been given an injection the night before. He couldn't go back to town either; Bonnie had mentioned that the person who came to collect the dead girl was someone powerful. Now, because of him, Bonnie felt they had provoked a major figure and mentioned that it might cost Steven an arm.
As Steven ran, he cursed under his breath. He had come to make a fortune, not knowing that he wouldn't earn a dime and would instead stir up trouble. He blamed his damn rich brother and his she-devil wife, This debacle couldn't just be left unresolved.
He planned to go to the media, to expose the sinister couple. He wanted everyone to know that he and Darwin were brothers. Darwin, cold-hearted and corrupt, not only neglected his brother but also allowed his wife to harm his own sibling.
With these thoughts in mind, Steven decided not to leave Bay City. He figured he would find a place to hide out and bide his time for the perfect opportunity to strike.
On her way back, Fiona received detailed information about Daren's family. Daren hadn't lied. His mother, Clarie Baker, had indeed been accepted to college with high scores. During the summer break, she went to work in the city to earn money. When she returned, she was pregnant. During that era, having a baby out of wedlock was a scandal in the small town. Clarie's parents disowned her and kicked her out of their home.
Clarie left her hometown and settled in a more secluded fishing village, where she gave birth to twins Daren and Bettie Baker. Over the years, the family of three relied on each other. Clarie never remarried. To ensure her children could get an education, she lived in the fishing village for several years before moving to the city where she had first worked. She rented a fish stall in the market, providing a decent life for them.
Tragedy struck five years ago when Clarie fainted at her stall and was rushed to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with a heart condition. She could no longer do the strenuous work, and the family's savings were drained by medical expenses. They had no choice but to return to the town.
After he returned, Steven somehow caught wind of the matter and came knocking.
The investigator said solemnly, "Clarie's neighbor mentioned that Steven always came asking for money. Initially, the kids were oblivious because they were in school, but then Daren caught him demanding cash one day, and the two had a huge fight. After that incident, Daren dropped out of school..."
"About three months back, Steven unexpectedly showed up claiming he had a great marriage prospect for Bettie Baker. After Clarie refused, Steven got physical with her, and Daren went home and beat him to a pulp. However, at the beginning of this month, Bettie Baker was kidnapped by Steven and his goons on her way home from school, taken to settle some debts. When Daren attempted a rescue, they demanded two hundred thousand dollars for her release."
"Was Clarie coerced by Steven?" Fiona asked with a grave tone.
She remembered how Daren had just been cursing at Steven.
"Nobody knows the details, Clarie has never disclosed who the father of her children is, and she's always denied that Steven is their dad."
"Mm," Fiona responded, "If she won't tell, there's no need to pry further. Just bring her and her daughter over as soon as you can."
