Chapter 663 Annie was Poisoned

"Yes!" Sabre accepted the mission without hesitation. "I'll return and report to you in person."

Robert didn't reply.

"Stay safe, young master."

Robert ended the call.

He clutched the brooch tightly and gazed at the dark horizon of the sea.

Since arriving here, Robert had never contemplated going back.

In their youth, Hathaway often spoke of marrying him and building a seaside home together. However, after the Ross family's retaliation and his devastating car accident, those dreams were shattered.

As Hathaway grew older, she fell in love with other men.

Robert harbored no bitterness.

None at all.

Darwin was a successful man, the one Hathaway loved. She could entrust her future to such a remarkable man, which comforted Robert.

But Darwin disappointed her, causing her humiliation, leading to her family's abandonment and her own resignation.

A year ago, Hathaway had begun to emerge from her despair with his support. They had planned to retreat to the island he owned and live a simple life.

But they never imagined Hathaway would be diagnosed with cancer.

The foundation of hope she had built crumbled entirely.

Robert explored countless avenues, consulted numerous experts, but Hathaway's body had grown too frail over the years, the cancer discovered too late.

No matter how much he spent on medication, cancer kept spreading unabated.

Robert seethed with anger, his hatred boiling over uncontrollably.

He embarked on his quest for vengeance.

As those who had once scorned Hathaway met their miserable ends, Robert's heart found no solace, only mounting irritability.

His tally of victims grew.

Then, two months ago, Hathaway uncovered the truth.

"Robert, I never imagined you'd stoop so low for me. Do you realize how many lives you've snuffed out? There are children and the elderly among them—kids I've cradled in my arms, and seniors who showed me kindness in my youth!"

Hathaway was shattered.

After a heated confrontation, she stormed out of the hospital, ignoring Robert's calls, never wanting to lay eyes on him again.

When he finally tracked her down, Hathaway's body had wasted away in a squalid corner.

His beloved was decaying in a dingy, dilapidated flat.
Even now, the memory drives Robert to the brink of madness.

He had lost Hathaway.

With nothing left to lose and fear no longer a factor, he sought out Darwin.

Darwin was the root cause of it all.

If not for Darwin, Hathaway might have found happiness with another man. Her life might not have been as blissful, but it would've been healthy and vibrant.

So, Darwin deserved the ultimate punishment.

He was the sole target of Robert's wrath.

Clutching the brooch tightly, its sharp edges piercing his palm, Robert felt no pain.

He let the blood trickle through his fingers.

Darwin and Fiona were still on the hunt for Robert when Annie faced a close call.

"Last night, one of the assassins almost slipped into Miss Annie's room. Luckily, you instructed us not to allow anyone near her without permission," the security officer reported urgently.

Fiona hurried over as the officer recounted the previous night's events.

"The intruder posed as a hotel staff member. We didn't think much of it until this morning when Miss Annie noticed something off about her breakfast. Upon investigation, we found traces of poison. If she hadn't been so vigilant and taken just a small bite, it could've been fatal."

Before seeing Annie, Fiona inspected the breakfast spread.

"How did she realize the breakfast was tampered with?" Fiona inquired.

"Miss Annie mentioned that the eggs should be atop the avocado puree. Her assistant stressed this to the chef upon check-in. She's been a long-time guest and never had such an issue. Despite the chef's assurances, I had a hunch and conducted a toxicology test," the officer explained.

Fiona nodded, understanding.

Annie's particularity about food was well-known.

Little did she know it would save her life.

"Miss Annie seems quite shaken," the officer remarked.

"I'll check on her."

After a while, Fiona entered Annie's suite.

Annie sat huddled on the sofa, knees drawn up.

"You're here," she acknowledged Fiona, her eyes void of their usual sharpness and sparkle, appearing drained.

"Annie, are you alright? Should we take you to the hospital?" Fiona asked softly.

Annie met her gaze. "I know death looms over me, invisible but inevitable. After all, I arranged Hathaway's marriage with Darwin. I set it all in motion. Even the lawyer who drafted the marriage contract met his end. Why spare me?"

"We have leads on the true culprit. We'll resolve this soon," Fiona reassured.

"Leads? What leads?" Annie inquired.

Fiona pondered briefly. "The assassins, their identities exposed, are linked to the Astralis family's young master."

"Astralis? Our rivals for a century. What's their connection to Hathaway? And why this vendetta?" Annie questioned, puzzled.

Fiona scrutinized Annie.

She searched for any telltale signs in Annie's demeanor.

"Hathaway and Robert went to the same school. Rumor has it, the Ross family sought revenge on the Astralis for a lost deal and hired someone to cripple Robert. Have you heard about this?" Fiona paused. "It's a significant event."

Annie smiled, glancing at the clock behind Fiona.

"Now that you mention it, I recall. Robert and Hathaway were close in school. Tragic they had to be like Romeo and Juliet due to family feuds. Otherwise, they could've been childhood sweethearts. Then Hathaway wouldn't have fallen for Darwin and caused all this chaos." "
