Chapter 202 Leaving Evidence
The first time Simon abused her, she immediately flew back to her mother for comfort.
But upon returning home, she overheard Thomas joking, "For a madman, Simon seems to keep her woman very well!"
That's when Lilian realized she had been deceived.
Later, upon her insistence, she learned that the Solomon family had given her family a large sum of money.
She was forbidden from ever bringing up that topic.
That pile of money was later used by Thomas to buy a villa for a woman.
Thus, her life was ruined.
But the tragic irony didn't end there.
On the third day after her return home, Darwin woke up.
Lilian fell apart. She had chosen to marry into the royal family only after eavesdropping on a conversation between the doctor and Grandma Solomon, in which they said Darwin had almost no chance of waking up.
It was much later that she discovered the disgusting truth.
By that time, Darwin was already showing signs of recovery.
It was Grandma Solomon who contrived the whole situation, making her believe Darwin was unreliable, forcing her to cling to what seemed like another tempting lifeline.
All she wanted was to find Darwin and have him save her.
But before she could reach out to Darwin...
Simon showed up and forcibly took her back to Europe.
"We're still family, no matter what. You're with Darwin now, he's been good to you, right?" Thomas snatched the car keys from Lilian's hands.
"What are you doing?" Lilian protested angrily.
Thomas pressed the button.
Immediately, the lights on Lilian's car turned on.
Thomas ran in front of Lilian's car, "Oh my… Did he buy this for you?"
"Give them back to me!" Lilian seethed through clenched teeth.
Thomas smirked, "You wear luxury clothes, drive a fancy car, and when Mom gets liver cancer, you don't care. Do you even qualify as a human being?"
Mrs. Robbins covered her mouth, her head bowed as she sobbed quietly.
Lilian was incredibly annoyed, "Back then, when I asked for your help to save me, you all ignored me for the sake of money, and that was when I cut ties with you. Whether you live or die has nothing to do with me!"
No sooner had Lilian finished speaking.
Thomas's foot lashed out, striking her in the waist.
Lilian cried out in pain and fell to the ground, "Ouch! You're being physical?"
"Thomas!!" Mrs. Robbins cried out in shock, quickly stepping forward to pull her son away from further violence.
Thomas pointed at Lilian, "Bitch, don't think I don't know. You didn't tell Darwin that you chose Simon on your own when you thought Darwin was finished, did you?"
Lilian was taken aback.
Thomas continued, "Mom needs money for her treatment, and I need a new car by tomorrow. I want five million dollars. If it's a cent less or a minute late, I'll go straight to Darwin and blow the whole story wide open!"
"Thomas, don't be like this! Come with mom, let's go!"
Thomas pointed at Lilian.
He dragged Mrs. Robbins into Lilian's car and drove off with the car.
Lilian could still manage the five million dollars.
Over the years, the salary Darwin paid her had always been quite high.
And she had always had very successful projects in the works.
Being threatened to pay up, how could she swallow that indignity?
But then she remembered what Darwin said in the hospital room, about owing her something.
The truth must never reach Darwin.
Otherwise, with his nature already so decisive, he'd only become more ruthless towards her.
Perhaps even the debt of saving his life wouldn't matter!
In distress, Lilian covered her face and wept, her waist aching and sore...
After she composed herself and left, a tall, sweet-looking woman emerged from near the elevator.
Ashton had come today to visit an associate's mother.
What she hadn't expected was to stumble upon such juicy gossip!
She recalled hearing from Fiona about Lilian being forced into a royal marriage, encountering a scoundrel, suffering abuse, and even losing her chances to ever be a mother.
At the time, Ashton truly sympathized with Lilian.
But now, the story twisted in an unbelievable direction.
She wasn't forced into marriage at all!!
So, what about the abuse, the removal of her womb? What parts were true and which fabricated?
Logically, her precious family was now disconnected from Darwin.
It wasn't her place to meddle in Darwin's mess, but... Ashton vaguely felt that Lilian was not someone to be taken lightly.
She decided that it was better to have leverage than not, and without hesitation, she called Burl.
Burl was catching up on sleep when the abrupt call woke him.
He answered the phone, sounding irritated, "What?"
"Wake up. I'm sending you an address, get me the past five minutes of surveillance from in front of the hospital's elevator 3, and save it!" Ashton was stern.
Burl sat up, showing signs of concern, "Did someone hit you?"
"Who would dare? Just save it and don't peek!"
"What's with the secrecy?" Burl's end rustled, presumably arising from bed.
Shortly after, he asked, "Is this about catching a cheater?"
"Why all the questions? Hurry up!" Ashton hung up.
Biting her nail, she walked towards her car.
She trusted Burl to get the job done. And soon enough, the video arrived by email.
Burl, thinking it concerned Ashton's privacy, didn't dare watch.
"Burl, if this video becomes useful, you'll be the hero, and I'll buy you the best equipment!"
Burl thought for a moment: "How about we settle for ten grand now?"
"So cheap!" Ashton retorted, "Didn't you just buy something and make seven or eight million dollars? And you still ask me for ten grand?"
"PayPal or bank transfer?"
After Ashton transferred the money, she returned.
Later, she vented to Fiona.
To her surprise, Fiona seemed unfazed.
"He's saving money to get married," Fiona replied.
"Is he in love?" Ashton immediately became curious. "Is the person attractive? Um... a guy or a girl?"
Fiona laughed and nudged her head, "All he does is go from school to home, who would he be dating?"
"What a waste!" Ashton shook her head. Burl is quite the cutie, you know. His type is really popular right now. He should be quite the catch!
Fiona just smiled and didn't respond.
"Is Chicago still not paying much attention to you?" Ashton asked, with a mouthful of strawberry.
Fiona nodded, "I don't know if letting her interact with Darwin was the right or wrong decision."
"Kids forget things quickly. Once she gets back to the island tomorrow and plays for a few months, she'll forget all about him," Ashton tried to reassure her.
"I hope so." Although Fiona said this, she knew deep down that Chicago would likely find it hard to forget Darwin.
