Chapter 645 I Can't Live Without Him

Fiona's colleagues at the studio were gossiping about her having OCD.

"[I was thinking of buying Miss Annie a new pen cap.] Fiona responded when her own pen cap broke.

[Should I find a repair expert for you?] someone asked.

[I'll ask Miss Annie first.] Fiona said before putting away her phone.

Once her phone was out of sight, Fiona glanced over at Darwin and found his eyes slightly red.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

Darwin's gaze met hers, and Fiona leaned in, touching his cheek gently. "Didn't we agree not to dwell on the past?" she whispered.

Darwin lowered his eyes, then leaned into her embrace. "I tried," he admitted.

Fiona had noticed Darwin acting differently lately. She resolved to convince him to see a psychologist during their next hospital visit for his brain blood clot.

At the hospital, Kevin had his wound stitched up before visiting Annie.

"How are you feeling?" Annie asked when he entered.

"Just a bit more blood than usual, but I'll survive," Kevin replied with a smile.

"You saved my life today. I owe you," Annie said with a bitter smile. "Your treatment expenses will be covered by the company. Thank you."

Kevin shook his head. "Don't mention it. It's part of the job. We've identified the attacker. He's connected to Miss Hathaway somehow. Crazy guy."

Annie fiddled with her pen. "He couldn't reach Darwin and Fiona, so he came for me," she said coolly.

Despite the attempt on her life, Annie seemed oddly unfazed.

"That's your favorite pen!" Kevin exclaimed, noticing the broken cap. "It's been with you since I started working here."

Annie stared at the damaged cap. "It's just a pen," she said dismissively.

Kevin was surprised by her lack of reaction.

"You're injured. Go rest. I'll manage here," Annie insisted.

"I can still work," Kevin protested.

Annie fixed him with a look. "Take some time off. Spend it with your family. You can come back in the spring."

Kevin sensed something amiss. "Are you keeping something from me?" he asked.

Annie laughed it off. "Just follow my instructions. I don't like repeating myself."

Kevin sighed. "Understood."

"I'll double your bonus," Annie added, trying to lighten the mood.

Kevin managed a strained smile.

Kevin managed a strained smile, pulling at the corners of his mouth.

Annie persuaded Kevin to rest in the hospital room, then endured her own pain as she slowly made her way to the window, clutching the pen.

Outside, rain poured relentlessly.

Lost in thought, Annie stared at the pen in her hand, reminiscing.

In her mind, she heard the voice of a young child.

"Big sister, this is the lucky pen I bought for you!"

Annie's memories drifted, her grip on the pen tightening.

As the rain persisted, it transitioned into a mix of rain and snow.

In another setting, Chicago and Charles sat by a large glass window, observing the rain fog shroud the lawn and distant orchard.

"I'm glad we played outside with Jessie this morning. Otherwise, the rain would've been boring," Chicago remarked.

Charles nodded, engrossed in physics problems on his iPad, preparing for an upcoming competition.

Stuart, uncomfortable with the cold, bundled up and settled beside Chicago, looking dispirited.

Chicago, noticing, suggested, "Uncle Stuart, why not use an adult stool? You're practically sinking into that one!"

"We don't have one at home. I'll make one when the weather improves," Stuart replied, pulling out a woodworking guide.

Content with his response, Chicago returned to gazing out the window.

Occasionally, she pondered about the impact of the cold weather on the surroundings.

Meanwhile, Fiona returned, finding them all seated in a row.

Excitedly, Chicago rushed toward her. "Mommy!"

Fiona lifted her up, noticing how much she'd grown.

"Your dad's not feeling great today," Fiona whispered to Chicago. "Want to cheer him up?"

In a loud whisper, Chicago asked, "Why's Daddy sad? Did someone bother him?"

Darwin overheard, causing Fiona to chuckle.

"Babe, you're not whispering very quietly," Fiona teased.

Looking puzzled, Chicago turned to Darwin. "Can you teach me next semester's lessons during the break?"

Darwin agreed, and Chicago eagerly proposed they start immediately.

After they left, Fiona took Chicago's spot and sat quietly.

Her thoughts drifted to Hathaway, pondering her choices and sacrifices.
