Chapter 1189
Hubert's stare was like he could see right through everything.
When he looked at Fiona, she felt a sudden pang of guilt. "We gotta go now," she said.
"Alright," Hubert nodded.
Fiona grabbed Darwin's arm, and they left the hospital.
Since it was almost time for Charles and Chicago to get out of school, Darwin suggested they pick up the kids together and head home.
Fiona agreed.
On the way, she tried to act normal, but Darwin could still sense her unease.
Usually, they picked up Chicago first, but today they went to get Charles first.
When Charles came out and saw them, he looked surprised.
Darwin smiled and waved. "Charles, let's go pick up Chicago together."
Charles usually moved slowly, but he jogged over. "Didn't we agree to pick up Chicago first? It's not good to keep her waiting."
Despite his words, Fiona could tell he was happy.
"Dad, what happened to your hand?" Charles noticed Darwin's bandaged hand and frowned.
"I got cut by a small piece of porcelain in the bathroom," Darwin explained, bending down. "Sorry for worrying you, Charles. I'll be more careful."
"Okay," Charles said, looking at Fiona.
Fiona forced a smile.
How was she going to explain Darwin's illness to Charles and Chicago?
Not wanting to keep Chicago waiting, Charles quickly got in the car.
When they arrived to pick up Chicago, she had been waiting for about twenty minutes but was still happy.
Seeing Darwin get out of the car, she ran towards him. "Dad!"
Darwin squatted down and hugged her.
"You picked up Charles first today, that's great! Finally, you listened to me!" she said happily. "Dad, the day after tomorrow we can go camping. I told my friends, and they were so jealous! I'm the only one who doesn't have to go to tutoring classes on weekends!"
Fiona sat in the car, watching them talk happily, her heart aching.
After getting in the car, Chicago saw Darwin's bandaged hand and asked a bunch of questions.
After learning it wasn't serious, she sighed in relief and then scolded, "Dad, don't get hurt again. The three of us will be very worried about you!"
"Okay, I'll listen to you, Chicago," Darwin nodded.
Chicago added, "No, Dad should listen to Mom. I listen to her, and Charles listens to her too!"
Fiona looked at Chicago and smiled gently.
No matter how tough things got, she had to keep going, even if it was just for Charles and Chicago.
With the kids in the car, the atmosphere became lively, and even Fiona's gloom lifted a bit.
Back at Emerald Pool, Fiona made an excuse about having work to do and went to the study alone.
After sitting down, she stared blankly at the computer for a while.
