Chapter 1144

Rex's tragic fate bore a striking resemblance to his past self's circumstances.

Darwin figured saving Rex was kinda like saving his younger self.

"Why can't you be my dad, Uncle Solomon?" Rex sobbed, clinging to Darwin.

Darwin spent the whole day with Rex, just wandering around town.

By the afternoon, Rex had chilled out.

"Uncle Solomon, thanks for cheering me up and sharing your childhood stories. I've decided to be brave and strong like you. I gotta figure out who I am before I give up on them!"

Darwin looked worried. "But if she keeps hitting you, what are you gonna do?"

"I'll call the cops!"

"You can also come to me. If she hits you again, I'll get revenge for you!"

"Okay!" Rex nodded. "Uncle Solomon, you've been with me all day. Your wife must be worried. You should head back!"

Darwin sighed, staring at his shoes. "She's still mad at me. Damn it, I forgot to check in with her during lunch," he said, pulling out his phone.

But he dropped it, and it fell into the lake.

Darwin, thinking about his promise to Fiona, jumped into the lake to fish it out.

The lake was murky and deep. When Darwin climbed out, he didn't have the phone.

Rex was also gone.

Soaking wet and looking like a mess, Darwin was about to check the car for spare clothes when he heard cries of pain.

It sounded like Rex.

Darwin followed the sound to a shop where a man was slapping Rex.

Without thinking, Darwin kicked the guy.

Caught off guard, the man couldn't dodge.

Darwin's fists landed hard, one after another.

Onlookers gasped.

Darwin was pulled away, and the man, face bloody, hid in a corner, cursing.

The kid who had been beaten cowered, crying, "Don't hit my dad."

Darwin's ears buzzed.

He realized the kid wasn't Rex but some stranger's kid.

"Call the cops and arrest this lunatic!" the man cried to the neighbors.

"Timothy, you hit your kid too hard. Even a passerby couldn't stand it!"

"Exactly! Look at the kid's face."

After the commotion, Darwin was taken away by officers.

They recognized him.

"Mr. Solomon, you need someone to bail you out. Got a phone?"

Darwin, soaking wet, shook his head.

The officer said, "It's no big deal; what's your wife's number? I'll contact her for you!"
