Chapter 1408
When Darwin started his sessions with Hubert, the first thing Hubert said was, "First off, you gotta understand, they don't exist."
"This is different. He's a part of me that split off, the evil part!" Darwin's eyes were bloodshot, tears streaming down his face. He cried out, "The part that wasn't loved or forgiven. I don't want to merge with him, Hubert. Help me, I'll give you anything you want!"
"You think that before you lost your memory, you were unloved and unforgiven, right?" Hubert asked gently.
Darwin was agitated. "You know how terrible I was, how I bullied her, and how I nearly killed my child by forcing Fiona to fake her death and run away. If I merge with him, I don't know when I'll do something terrible again. I don't want that! I don't want it!"
Hubert said, "Ms. Rhoads already knows about your situation."
With that one sentence, Darwin's agitation vanished instantly.
He stood there stiffly, like a child caught doing something wrong, terrified and helpless.
"You shouldn't have told her. This is just a small problem, we can fix it with more physical therapy." Darwin's face was full of pain, tears rolling uncontrollably. "She must be so disappointed... so disappointed."
"She asked me to give you this." Hubert pulled a phone from his pocket and handed it to Darwin.
Darwin hesitated. "Whose is it?" he asked.
"Yours." Hubert pointed to the phone case. "Your daughter drew this for you. It was supposed to be your Christmas gift the year you had your accident."
Darwin's mind hadn't caught up yet, but his body reacted first, quickly taking the phone from Hubert.
He turned it over, looking at the vibrant patterns on the case. "It's the sun..."
The sun was at the center, with colorful plants and animals radiating out from it, full of life.
"Ms. Rhoads said this is how Chicago sees the sun. She's strong and warm, constantly giving life to everything. Chicago hopes the sun can give her dad the most vibrant life." Hubert said, feeling a bit envious himself.
Darwin's tears fell in large drops.
"Mr. Solomon, maybe your past wasn't as bad as you think. The so-called other part of you that split off is absurd." Hubert gently patted Darwin's shoulder and said, "Even if your soul isn't complete, it's because you gave parts of it to your wife and child. What you see isn't a part of you, just a nightmare keeping you from going home."
"He knows how much you love your wife and child, so he uses them as his weapon. You shouldn't let him win." With that, Hubert left.
Darwin sat back on the hospital bed.
The phone was still off. Fiona had given it back to Darwin before, but he had refused it.
At the time, Fiona said, "The phone is on the nightstand. Whether you turn it on or not, it's up to you."
Darwin knew.
Fiona had a reason for giving it back to him now.
Darwin's fingers trembled.
He pressed the power button.
"Turn it on, and we can become one." The dark, brooding figure across from Darwin appeared again, watching him with eager eyes.
Hearing this, Darwin immediately wanted to stop.
But then he thought of something, looked up at the figure, and his eyes turned cold and determined.
"No," he said. "I'll listen to my wife."
The figure's smile froze, his face quickly darkening. He sneered, "Fine, then turn it on. I can't wait..."
Before he could finish, the phone in Darwin's hand lit up with a soft blue glow, the silver logo appearing on the screen.
He had turned it on.
