Chapter 974

No one had told Thalassa about the incident; they were worried it would only make her anxious.
In the evening, the originally planned crab-catching activity with friends had to be canceled because of Chicago's injury.
No one had any objections except for Chicago.
"Alexander is super awesome; I'm totally fine now!" Chicago swung her arm. "Really. Mommy, let us go play!"
"No," was the reply.
It wasn't Fiona who spoke, but Charles.
"Charles!" Chicago was almost ready to throw a tantrum on the ground.
She just couldn't sit still.
Charles looked serious. "You must rest for two days."
Upon seeing Charles so serious, Chicago drooped her head. "I won’t play with you; I'm going to find Dad!"
Then, she huffed and step over the threshold.
Hearing Chicago's voice, Darwin came out of the room.
"Dad, I want to go play by the river, but Charles and Mommy won't let me!" She pitifully hugged Darwin's leg, looking up at him with her beautiful eyes filled with a pleading look.
Darwin looked at her. Suddenly, an image of her lying on the grass, covered in blood, flashed through his mind. He immediately looked away.
"Chicago, sweetheart, you got hurt today; you really can't play in the water. How about in a couple of days? I will go with you then!" Darwin half-squatted, gently hugging her and patting her back.
Children's bodies are tender.. When Darwin's hand rested on her back, he could feel her heartbeat. It was very strong.
His terrified heart was greatly comforted by feeling Chicago's heartbeat.
‘What happened to me...’ Darwin thought in frustration.
"Okay." Chicago softly rested her chin on Darwin's shoulder. "Dad, you're shaking."
Darwin's body stiffened.
"It's okay; I'm totally fine." She hugged Darwin, gently patting his back and soothing him in a soft voice, "Daddy is here to protect me, I know that. I don't mad at all; I love you even more now!"
Darwin tightened his arms, holding the little sweetheart in his arms.
"Baby, I will never let you get hurt again," Darwin said softly.
"Okay!" Her pleasant laughter came to his ear.
"What are you two whispering about? Can't Mommy and Charles listen?" Fiona stood with her arms crossed, leaned against the door frame with a typically serious Charles standing beside her.
"Secret!" Chicago let go of Darwin, turning to look at Fiona and Charles. "A secret between Daddy and me!"
Fiona couldn't help but laugh. Out of the corner of her eye, she suddenly noticed the dog bed.
Jessie had somehow come out of the dog bed, standing very straight, its gaze warily fixed on Darwin and Chicago.
Just as she was about to look over, Chicago joyfully called out, leaving Darwin's embrace and running towards Jessie. "Jessie!"
Jessie immediately dropped its guarded demeanor. It crouched down a bit, its ears went back, and its tail started wagging.
