Chapter 1462
Hubert waved his hand dismissively. "No need, no need, I'm not picky. Anything's fine!"
Chicago didn't wait for Fiona to respond. "It's the rule, just follow me!" He grabbed Hubert and headed towards the dining room.
Fiona suddenly turned to Charlotte. "Charlotte."
Charlotte froze, looking guilty. "Did you climb over the wall again?" Fiona asked.
"You saw?" Charlotte's confidence visibly faltered.
Christopher found this amusing every time. His daughter Charlotte was fearless, except when she was in front of Fiona, where she seemed a bit timid.
"Your finger is bleeding," Fiona said helplessly.
Charlotte looked down and noticed her right index finger was bleeding slightly, probably from scraping against something when she climbed over the wall.
Christopher reacted as if facing a major crisis. "There are all sorts of dirty things on that outer wall. It's easy to get infected. If it gets infected, you could lose your finger!"
He hurriedly pulled Charlotte to where the first aid kit was, took out some antiseptic, and quickly cleaned her wound.
Charlotte was a bit stunned, looking at Christopher in confusion. She glanced at the wound, which seemed no worse than a minor ant bite to her.
"Father," she began.
Christopher didn't look up, carefully removing what seemed to be dirt from her wound.
Charlotte originally wanted to say that when she broke her arm before, he wasn't this panicked. But the words stuck in her throat, and she didn't say them.
Things weren't the same as before. Even though she thought a broken arm was no big deal, she just fixed it and let it heal. But Charlotte preferred it this way, with Christopher acting like it was a major crisis over a small cut on her finger.
"Didn't you watch the evening news a few days ago? A little girl from the school three blocks over fell during an extracurricular activity, scraped her palm, didn't think much of it, went home and got a high fever, and by the next day, her hand had to be amputated!" Christopher muttered as he worked.
Charlotte nodded. "I'll be more careful in the future."
"You absolutely must be careful!"
Charlotte's lips curled into a smile. Then she instinctively looked towards Fiona. Their eyes met. Her ears turned slightly red, but Fiona just gave her a gentle smile.
If parents were constantly fighting for survival, just trying to live to see another day, where would they find time for tenderness? A small cut was nothing compared ,to surviving another day. Only in times of peace can people afford to care about such things.
Fiona went to the living room. When Darwin had just returned, the family vacation photos were prominently displayed. She always took a moment to look at them whenever she passed by. Every time she looked, her smile reached her eyes.
"Fiona!"
Fiona was looking at the photos when she felt a tug on her pant leg. She glanced down. Melissa was holding onto her pant leg, looking up at her with a tearful expression.
Fiona quickly picked her up. "Melissa, did you just wake up?"
"Daddy and Mommy aren't here!" Melissa said, her voice sweet and childlike, sounding very upset as she nestled against Fiona's shoulder.
