Chapter 1417
After Burl finished his rant, Charles glanced up at him.
Burl looked utterly dejected.
Just a moment ago, downstairs, he had wanted to ask Chicago to go outside and play frisbee with him and Jessie. But she was in a hurry to draw a portrait of Charlotte and had no time to play.
Then he tried to pick up Melissa to play.
But Melissa clung to Charlotte's finger and refused to budge. When he tried to force her, Melissa immediately started crying in frustration, crying out Charlotte's name.
"I have things to do too," Charles said, looking away. "Uncle Burl, you're an adult now. Stop clinging to the kids. You should find something of your own to do."
Burl was utterly shocked, staring blankly at Charles as he slowly walked away.
"Fiona?" Burl looked at Fiona with a face full of grievance. "Are the kids growing up and starting to dislike me?"
Fiona couldn't help but laugh.
She raised her hand and gently patted his head. "You need a haircut. Your hair is covering your eyes."
Burl touched the hair in front of his eyes and sighed deeply. "They used to rely on me so much."
When Charles and Chicago were younger, they spent most of their time on Janna's Blaise, with limited people around.
Besides the household staff and bodyguards, the people they saw most were him and Dagwood.
As Dagwood got busier with work, it was mostly Burl who accompanied the two kids as they grew up.
Whenever Burl went out and came back, they were always especially happy.
"Burl, this is something you have to go through," Fiona said, patting his shoulder. "One day, they'll grow up and be able to go off on their own. It won't just be you; Darwin and I won't be needed either."
She paused and then said seriously, "Honestly, you should consider settling down."
Burl muttered, "I want to. Around New Year's, I even dreamed of Grandpa. That usually kind old man was chasing me with a cane, scolding me for not finding a partner and continuing the family line."
Charles slowly returned to his room, sat down at his computer desk, and after a moment of thought, opened the search engine he had developed.
He slowly typed in: [high school entrance exam.]
For Charles, any exam was a piece of cake.
But he knew that, like applying to college, the high school entrance exam was a big deal for most people.
If regular schooling was already so difficult, then what about skipping grades consecutively?
Charles printed out all the high school entrance exam papers from Bay City for the past few years.
Except for literature, which he wasn't great at, he finished the rest in one go.
Then, based on the questions he had done, he ordered a bunch of practice books online, listing Christopher as the recipient.
After finishing all this, Charles heard a knock on the door.
He glanced at the time. It was already 2 AM.
This was the first time he had stayed up late since he got sick.
Charles got up to open the door and saw Fiona standing there.
"Why are you up so late?" Fiona squatted down and gently touched his cheek.
"Sorry, Mom. I lost track of time. I'll set an alarm next time." Charles replied.
"No need to apologize. It's the holidays. It's okay to stay up late once in a while," Fiona said softly.
Charles usually had a very regular schedule.
He hadn't felt tired while he was focused, but now that he knew it was late, his eyelids grew heavy, and he started yawning.
Fiona's eyes were full of amusement.
Charles was so mature for his age.
It was rare to see him looking so adorable.
"Go to bed." She said gently.
"What about you, Mommy? You should rest too. Don't stay up late." Charles said, even though he was barely keeping his eyes open.
"I will, soon."
"Okay, goodnight, Mommy."
After Charles finished speaking, he wearily headed toward the bedroom.
