Chapter 263 No Need for a Wife's Backstory

She glanced at the operating room and then turned to a stunned Anniston and the sullen Lilian. "This is the first and last time I'm warning you. Don't try to stir up trouble. Darwin might spare you because you were once his mother, and you once saved his life, but I won't!"

Anniston and Lilian stared at her, not daring to retort.

Fiona then left with Ashton.

Once the coast was clear, Anniston hurried to Kenny, "Kenny, when did you marry someone like her? Do your parents know?"

"They know. They've been fixing up the old house these past few days. Once it's all set, I'll take her there to meet them."

Kenny wasn't lying about that.
In fact, reality was even more exaggerated.
Take Kenny's elegantly charming mother, for instance.
She insisted that she had put on five or six pounds over the New Year from overeating and had to lose the excess weight before her new daughter-in-law's arrival.
She didn't want to make a bad first impression.
Kenny's seemingly reserved father had started working out recently too.
He'd even asked about Ashton's preferences.
They had cleared out all the flowers from the home garden, planting the species that Ashton favored instead.

Not to mention the elderly—they were busy preparing welcoming gifts, only to end up trying to outdo each other.

His father had once risked it all just to sneak a photo of the grand-aunt's generous dowry. Small though the box was, it was crafted from the finest Fiona rosewood—an antique indeed. Inside lay a collection of top-quality jade jewelry, with just a single bracelet worth a fortune.

As for the fact that Kenny was getting married very early in his relationship, the entire Walker family showed remarkable cheer. They were all relieved to find out that Kenny was, in fact, straight.

"She’s a nobody! She has no status or background!" Anniston exclaimed in shock. "Marrying a woman like that brings you no advantage whatsoever!"

"Aunt, no offense, but your values are quite twisted. We, the Walker men, marry for love, never for a wife's background or status because it's simply not necessary."

Anniston's lips quivered with anger.

And Kenny had more where that came from.

"Besides, who says my wife doesn't have a good background?" He looked straight at Anniston. "My sister-in-law is the sole heir to the Rhoads Corporation. She treasures my wife dearly. Isn't that a good background?"

"The Rhoads Corporation?"

Anniston turned to Lilian.

"She's the daughter of Janna Rhoads' second son."

"Chelsea?" Anniston's eyes were about to bulge out of their sockets.

She had been quite intrigued by this young woman when she emerged on the scene and had been eager to make contact in hopes of a partnership.

"Mhm." Lilian nodded, her resentment surging.

Overwhelmed, Anniston slumped into a chair.

Kenny, already reluctant to engage with Anniston, sat across from her and began texting Ashton on his phone.

"Don't rush and watch your step; don't trip."

Ashton had arrived in a hurry and nearly stumbled.

No reply from Ashton. Probably too busy.

While waiting for her checkup, Fiona called both Janna Rhoads and Charles to report that she was safe.

Janna Rhoads responded calmly, "Alright, Grandma's at the airport and will be at your place tonight."

"Okay."

Things weren't as smooth on Charles' end.

"Mommy, I saw you bleeding!" Charles was frantic; the most emotional Fiona had heard him since his birth. "Where are you hurt? Does it hurt?"

"Baby, Mommy's okay!" Fiona soothed gently.

"I'll come with my little sister soon. You wait for me, okay?" Charles's voice was laced with tears.

Fiona's heart felt like it was breaking.
"Alright, Mommy's waiting for you," Fiona's voice was tender.

Charles was quiet for a moment before asking, "What about him?"

Fiona paused slightly.

"The news said... it seems like he's not moving anymore," Charles continued.

"He's still in the operating room, but it's going to be fine," Fiona assured.

"Okay," Charles’ voice choked up even more.

"There, there, sweet boy, don't cry," Fiona soothed. "You don't want to scare your little sister."

"Okay," Charles managed to respond again.

Then, Fiona went to go do her check-up exam.

"Mommy's got to have a quick exam. You be good and stay with Grandma Rhoads, okay?"

"Alright."

Ashton took Fiona's phone from her.

She comforted Charles with a few words and then waited outside the examination room.

Fiona went through a fast-track check-up.

The results came back quickly.

"Mild internal bleeding!" Ashton's tears fell drop by drop. "And you delayed getting a check-up!"

"The doc said rest should do it," she explained.

"Your knee is also fractured!"

After getting her injuries tended to, Fiona changed into a clean set of clothes, instantly looking less disheveled but still very pale. She finished these arrangements, IV in tow, and returned to the waiting area outside the operating room.

As it happened, she arrived just as Anniston's legal team did.

Because of her fracture, Fiona sat in a wheelchair with Ashton pushing it along. Their sudden appearance darkened Fiona's expression visibly.

"How's it going?" Kenny asked.

"I'll fill you in later," Ashton replied, not wanting to give the satisfaction to unwanted ears about her treasure being harmed.

"What are you all here for?" Fiona glared at the bodyguards. Her protectors, along with Darwin's, immediately stood up straight, even if they weren't sure what they'd done wrong.

"Who allowed these strangers to stay?" Fiona demanded.

Anniston couldn't stay silent.

"I called them here, and I am Darwin's guardian..."

"Take those two and get them out of here!" Fiona cut off Anniston impatiently with a command.

"Miss, you and Mr. Solomon are in a romantic relationship, correct? In this case, the only person with the authority to dismiss anyone would be Mrs. Potter , Mr. Solomon's mother," said a lawyer, adjusting his glasses with an air of professionalism.
"Chelsea, don't even think I'm clueless," Anniston's face twisted in fury. "You knew Darwin might not pull through, didn't you? That's why you're so eager to get rid of me! You're hoping to seize the moment and lay your hands on my son's fortune, aren't you?" She was seething. "Listen here and listen good—don’t get any ideas! He's not married, has no kids of his own, and no will! His dad and I are the sole heirs to his estate! That includes Grandma Solomon's antiques and jewelry. You won't get a single penny!"

Fiona watched Anniston then, a smile playing softly on her lips as her eyes lowered.

"Well done." She clapped condescendingly. "I can't wait to show Darwin your true colors when he wakes up."

Anniston was grinding her teeth in anger.

"Get her out," Fiona commanded once more.

But Anniston wasn't budging.

That was when Fiona dropped her bombshell, "Anniston, if you hate it so much, why not air your grievances for all to hear?"
