Chapter 1274
"I heard you got some new research going on about my illness, right?" Darwin's voice was raspy.
Hubert hesitated. "Yeah, but it's still in the early stages. Needs more testing."
"Don't you need patients for those tests? Use me," Darwin said, looking up at Hubert.
Darwin's once fierce eyes were now empty and dull. "I don't want the usual treatment. Try the new stuff on me."
"Darwin, it's gonna hurt. A lot," Hubert said seriously. "The physical therapy alone is five times tougher than the regular treatment."
"I don't care." Darwin kept his gaze on Hubert. "I want to go home. I want to be with them again."
Hubert was taken aback. "Your wife won't agree to this."
"Then don't tell her," Darwin said with a sad smile. "Just say it's part of the regular treatment."
"Darwin, you're putting me in a tough spot." Hubert hesitated.
The so-called new research was actually based on Aldrich's past work, with a lot of data from Aiden. And Darwin's illness was tied to Aiden too.
"I'm begging you," Darwin said, his tone calm and sincere.
Hubert was stunned and then fell silent for a long time.
Darwin didn't say anything either.
Finally, Hubert let out a short laugh. "Grandma Mitchell used to tell me you had a strong will. When you woke up from that coma, she was so worried she called me in the middle of the night, asking if I could make a drug to erase some of your memory."
He shook his head with a smile. "I asked her why, and she said she was scared you'd go looking for Lilian."
Darwin didn't react to the name.
Hubert continued, "A few days later, she called me again, all happy, saying she had nothing to worry about. She'd forgotten how strong-willed you are, that you never asked for help from anyone since you were a kid."
Darwin chuckled softly. "But I'm asking you now, aren't I?"
"I'll run some more tests on you. If they show you can handle the new treatment, we'll go for it. If not, you'll have to stick with the old method." Hubert paused. "Darwin, a few more months won't make much difference."
Darwin looked out the window.
The wind was blowing the leaves around, and the scene outside was bleak.
Hubert followed his gaze, feeling a bit regretful. He'd picked the wrong spot for Darwin's video call.
They should've gone to the lush greenhouse instead.
"My daughter seems to have grown taller," Darwin murmured. "Kids grow so fast; a few months can make a big difference."
"Fiona and I have been together for so many years..." Mentioning Fiona made Darwin's heart ache. He curled up in pain, clutching his chest.
"Darwin!" Hubert rushed over.
Darwin gasped for air, looking out the window, struggling to finish his sentence. "I've never spent a New Year with her, not even once."
Hubert was slightly stunned.
"Mr. Graham, I want to go home as soon as possible. I'm begging you." Darwin grabbed Hubert's arm, looking up at him with bloodshot eyes full of desperation.
Hubert sighed.
A syringe slipped out from his sleeve.
Darwin's condition was already causing severe physical symptoms, like heart pain.
But Hubert had checked, and Darwin's heart was fine, despite his stiff and weak limbs.
He was worried Darwin's emotions would get out of control after the video call with his family, so he'd prepared the medication in advance.
