Chapter 1455
Dinner was lively with Burl and Thalassa around.
Later in the evening, Wyatt flew in from the capital city.
As soon as he saw Darwin, he didn't say a word and went straight in for a big hug.
"You're late! You missed my grand show of taking the throne!" Wyatt gave Darwin a hearty slap on the back. "I'll let it slide this time, but you better not miss my big day next time!"
Darwin patted Wyatt's back twice. "Got it!"
After the brief emotional moment, Wyatt joined the lively group, keeping Janna laughing all night.
Dinner stretched until nearly ten o'clock.
The kids went to bed first.
Janna left the table shortly after.
Thalassa and Kenny soon put Melissa to sleep.
Burl got a call from the lab and hurried off to the study.
The dining room was left with a slightly tipsy Wyatt, Darwin, and Fiona.
Fiona thought the two might need some time to talk alone, so she excused herself to make some soup and left the dining room.
"No more food!" Wyatt suddenly declared, waving his hand as he stood up. "Darwin, let's go sit over there and chat."
"Sure."
Darwin could see the pain written all over Wyatt, even in his hair.
He wanted to help Wyatt, but Wyatt waved him off, steadied himself, and walked to the living room.
In the living room, Wyatt sat in the chair he always chose when he visited.
Stella had once posted a photo on social media of herself sitting in that very chair while staying at Emerald Pool.
Wyatt had thought about asking Fiona for the chair, but decided against it.
"Darwin," Wyatt said, closing his eyes, tears welling up at the corners.
"I'm here."
"I'm jealous of you," Wyatt said, a self-deprecating smile tugging at his lips.
"Miss White and you are different from Fiona and me," Darwin understood what he meant.
"Yeah, I used to think you treated her badly, like a real jerk," Wyatt exhaled deeply. "But why didn't I realize I treated Stella even worse? How much pain did she feel every time she saw me with another woman? How much did she hate me?"
Wyatt's voice choked up.
"You didn't think about it then because you believed she was guilty," Darwin replied.
Wyatt's eyes suddenly opened, filled with hatred. "Yeah, so I want the White family to never have peace for the rest of their lives!"
After that harsh declaration, the light in Wyatt's eyes quickly dimmed.
He slumped back into the chair. "And I have to live in eternal unrest, too."
"Wyatt, since Miss White has moved on, you should too. She wouldn't want you to stay stuck in the past."
Wyatt looked up at the ceiling light.
"Why can't I get another chance? I truly regret it."
Tears rolled down his cheeks.
Wyatt wanted Darwin to be happy because they had grown up together. Despite the rifts that had formed between them, Wyatt genuinely wished Darwin well.
But seeing Darwin and Fiona together with their adorable kids filled Wyatt with envy.
He wanted that too.
He was so close, just a little bit more. Wyatt's pain seemed almost tangible, wrapping around him tightly.
Stella and Alexander had been married for a year now, yet time hadn't lessened his pain at all.
It had only deepened it, inch by inch.
Darwin watched, feeling an inexplicable sense of shared sorrow.
